Hi all,
I have a 1980 ATC 185 that I'm have trouble keeping the chain tight on. I have a new chain and sprockets for it that I thought would fix the problem. It only has one chain adjuster unlike the newer ones. I can get the chain tight then when I ride it, it comes loose almost immediately. When I mean loose its like falling off. I'm not sure what to do I'm hoping some who could point me in the right direction.

Might need axle bearings or your just not tightening the 4 x 17mm carrier bolts good enough .

Start from the beginning.
loosen all 4 17 mill. bolts, tighten chain adjuster until there is about 1/2 inch slope in chain.
Now tighten all 4 17 mill bolts, really crank down on them . now double check the tensioner, is it double nutted? so it cant loosen up.That really is all there is to it.
Unless you have the wrong chain, or it is to long, can you take a link out? double check the length to the old chain. the new chain should be Little shorter.

I hope this helps
MrC.

I appreciate any and all information. I'm stumped on this a quick easy job that been haunting me.
I have the right size chain. I have tried changing the length of it too.
The 4x17mm bolts where all tight.
Adjusted to about a half inch of slope.
The axle bearings are good.
I'm just stumped no mater what I do it finds away to loosen up.
I was thinking it might of had something to do with not have two adjustments. It seems like the axle is moving.
