When I put this on it fits; however the bolt that matches the part doesn't fit. The bolt doesn't go in with the part on. The tensioner won't go on the shaft with the bolt in prior to installation.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Lots of levers don't fit with the bolt in there, you have to take it out slide the thing on, then put the bolt in.

Anyhow, I think that's your question...

Dirtcrasher is correct. Remove the bolt completely, slide the tensioner on the shaft making sure you have good splines and THEN put the bolt thru and tighten it.

The shaft has a indentation or groove cut into it, that the bolt passes against/partially through , this keep the arm in place even if the bolt comes loose.
The above fella's are correct, I just though you might want a more detailed explanation.

Now, you may have another issue we all missed.

Sometimes an aftermarket lever, once in correct position, the bolt may not slide thru perfectly, because it's aftermarket.

General when I have something off, I chase the threads. But I have had a couple shift levers that slid on fine, the bolt wouldn't slide thru.

Normally, I just grab a brill bit 1/16th or 1 - 2mm larger and I open up the clearance hole in the lever housing making sure not to touch the threaded side of the hole.

Other than that, sometimes something needs to be filed smooth, and or, that piece you have is a formed metal piece, not steel stock or billet that was threaded and drilled.

That piece you have is folded in half to make the tensioner, and when doing that there's often a small misalignment which may need some tweaking with pliers etc to manipulate things nice and straight.

Thanks guys. I was trying to force the bolt through with a c-clamp today. Probably not in the right location... I hope I can figure this out without messing too much stuff up. Ive read and re-read the manual, both Haynes and climber. This shouldn't be difficult...lol

Thanks again

Slow down, can you compare the new part to the old part, may be its the wrong part, may be there is a flaw in it. compare the new part to the old, and to the manual.
you are right when you reach for tools like a bigger hammer, vises and clamps, torches or welders, sometimes there may be another answer than to just force it.

Of course sometimes you do need to force it .lol
good luck

lol thanks and I agree! Haven't had the chance to mess with it anymore today. It didn't have one when I got it but the guy I got it from had a new one in the packet. Looks like ones that says will fit online but not positive. Does anyone have a picture of a chain tensioner on a 72-73 90?
