View Full Version : 86 350x sputtering under full throttle.

Hey everyone, I just rebuilt the carb for my 350x because it sat for a long time. After I put it all back together, I couldn't use full throttle when idling or moving. It would just start sputtering and backfiring. I tried adjusting my air-fuel mixture with my dialajet but the thing would just not run right. I know I have new exhaust headers as well as a new exhaust that I can find the name if needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and stay safe.

I think the name of the exhaust system is something like xmf or xmp, not sure.

Could be electrical like bad ground or cdi issue

Or it it could be a mainjet issue try goin up one size larger and check your spark plug to see if it's getting to much fuel

It's been a LONG time since I've looked at the Dial-a-jet. From what I remeber, they are used to lean out your jetting like if you went riding at higher altitudes than you normally ride at. If you installed an aftermarket exhaust, you'll need to go richer on your jetting. So I don't think that a Dial-a-jet is going to help in your situation.

Dial a jets seem to be for people that give up on jetting.
Once you get close to the right jet, you'll be happy.
I would bump my main jet up 2 or 3 sizes and see what it does, and pull the hose off the carb and let it run a good 60 seconds. Make sure the fuel flows the same way the whole time...

Ok, I just got some new jets in the mail today. I'll try those, and if they dont work, then I might check the wiring and see if there is a bad ground like someone mentioned above. Thanks for you help guys!

Seems like most my carb problems come from jet with the tiny holes that go sideways through it. If any of those holes are even the slightest plugged it causes all kinds of problems. They are only about .010 dia. or so and there is like 6 of them. You cant blow them clean, you have to poke a piece of wire or something through them.

I let the jets sit in a can of carb parts cleaner. Wouldnt have that freed them up or would I still have to poke through them?

Hey and just another stupid question, do you use air or nitrogen in the forks? I heard it doesn't make a difference, just nitrogen takes change in temperature better than air.

The smallest guitar string works well, just hold it up to light and make sure it's 100% clear.
On most old conventional forks the valve is for releasing built up pressure.
Air is fine, but check the manual because you can't add more than 2 or 3psi. You can make a spacer from tubing if you want the front end a bit stiffer, or buy progressive or new springs for your weight...
