My neighbor picked up this nice 89 Suzuki 300 quad-runner. It has this odd oil leak at the front of the motor. As you can see in the pic it’s above the. Cylinder/head gasket and below the valve cover. Doesn’t appear to be coming from the exhaust. Starts, runs great and doesn’t smoke. Any ideas before I get to deep into it? At this point from the location I’m thinking a cracked head. The leak is pretty substantial, leaks when it’s running and after you shut it off. Does not appear to be overfilled if anything it’s low on oil at this time.

I would spray the oil off with carb or brake cleaner and watch carefully to see when it starts leaking again. If it's substantial it shouldn't be hard to spot when it starts leaking again. You could also use a magnifying glass to help you see where the leak is coming from.

We did a bit of research on the parts schematic. It appears there are at least one if not 2 head bolts under the valve cover and it looks like there is a seal under the nut. We are assuming it’s coming from there. Good advice on the brake clean to investigate the leak scooter I’ll give that a try. I know it’s pretty deep within the fins.

Any bolts, or plugs blocking oil gallery bores on that side of the head?

Maybe use a small flashlight to help see the area as well. ;)

Like scooter said, a good soaking with degreaser and a power wash should reveal the leak when running. I really don't see anywhere that can be leaking except for a cracked jug? How's compression?

Don’t know about the compression coolpool we really haven’t had a chance to really check it out yet. It has electric start and I don’t even know if it has a pull start or not.
