185s Fork Swap - Axle Differences

Hi

I am trying to swap from what looks like an aftermarket solid fork on my 1983 185s. I thought 183s had forks stock? But my dad bought this in 1985. So maybe the previous owner rolled it and pretzeled the forks? So they slapped an aftermarket solid fork? Unsure.

My question is I bought some 1983 185s forks and the way they attach to the axle is different. Before I pull it all apart do I need anything else? Seems like at a minimum I would need something to anchor the front brake to the fork. But that is a threaded bung on the suspended forks and it’s just a metal channel on the solid forks.

In addition do I need a different axle?

Also any ideas on good fork seal kits for these shocks and weight oil?

I am worried this is an entire different front end from a different year of trike. Meaning the brakes won’t mount

I’ve never done that swap but it’s looking like you will need the 185s axle to make it work

what you have is a ealier 81 82 solid front fork someone chromed. the other fork you have is a suspended 83 fork. it uses a different front axle, spacer etc. if you want I can get you a pic. jim

I would love that. Could you please? I am entirely unsure what else I need. Probably will be more difficult to find it but at least I’ll know what I need.

hope this helps. the axle threads in and is clamped on the other end with a cap with 4 studs. alot of times the axle will get seized inside the fork and you destroy the axle or fork removing it. the do make replacement axles for the 195s type suspended front ends. jim
