Extremely new here as far as posting goes, but have been lurking unregistered for awhile. Searched, but came up dry so I might not be using the correct search times. Apologies for any disturbance.

While chasing down a no spark on the '85 Big Red I took the left side cover off to visually inspect the stator. Everything looked good, ready to button up and I noticed that the gear shift was out of place, blocking the reinstallation of the cover.

Looking at the service manual I see that my linkage slipped off. I reinstalled the gear shift with the punch marks lined up (actually, looking at the pictures now it appears I'm off by one tooth) and the gearshift will not move. I don't have any idea what's wrong here and how to get the thing hooked back up. It absolutely will not budget. I am imagining it's a simple fix and there's something I'm not seeing because I didn't have any issues taking the cover itself off other than using a little pressure to get the seal to break and get the stator away from the flywheel.

I read somewhere that I might have to retime the clutch on the other side of the engine, but that seems wild since all I did was take the gearshift off to remove the stator cover.

Can anyone help me understand what I'm not doing correctly?
