View Full Version : Sputtering starts

I just installed a Shindy kit in my 250SX carb after it sat, mostly dry, for 5 years or so. About every 10-15 kicks it will sputter-start for around 3 seconds, then die. I have spark, and it ran good when last started. I keep going back to something I'm missing in the carb, but after taking it off many times now, I can't imagine that's it. Before I start jumping into all other options, does anyone have any input on this stutter-start? It sure seems like that's a fuel delivery issue for my rookie mechanics.
Just a note, I soaked it in Berrymans, Ultra Sonic cycled it 5 times, and blasted at least 2 cans of carb cleaner thru it.

I should add, the choke doesn't affect starting at all. The only way to get any sputter at all is hold the throttle wide open.

The petcock screen isn’t clogged is it? If not I’d check compression after that.

I'm running it straight off one of those portable type fuel tanks. I don't know what the thing is called, a bottle hangs there with a fuel line out the bottom and a petcock to control it.
By coincidence, I did get my new petcock just a few hours ago, but I really believe my portable one is providing fuel. I tested that at first.

Ran fine when parked then sat for half a decade?
I'd check the air box intake and exhaust for critter nests. A plugged exhaust will do just what's described.
Anything stored long term around here must have the muffler exits capped off or dirt daubers will plug them up in summer. Something large enough and mice will also build nest. Spider webs usually blow out easy enough.
Standing behind anything around here that hasn't been started in a couple months is a good way to get blasted with some type of critter debris.

Well, by coincidence, I was browsing old posts here about sun up and I saw someone else mention that very thing. I got to dabbling with other projects today and just walked in to take a break and see if anyone had recommendation. Lo and behold, you called it. Dirt daubers had it plugged tight. I poked around with a screwdriver and sprayed my ultra tight power washer (NOT under motor power), and it started right up.
I have limited mechanical ability and at sun up this morning I was fretting over CDI's, compression, re-ringing....and now I'll be riding it today!

Thanks for the update. That's great news.
A lot of my stuff sits around here and I use plastic shopping bags to plug the exhaust up when not in use. That seems to work good.

I didn’t even think about that stuff. I’m in Arizona don’t get much of that.

I get on the wife about closing our barn doors, because the things make messes everywhere, and they particularly love the squirter hole for my Mercury boat motor. It sure did the trick though, it runs like a champ now. I put about 3 miles on it tonight. I have new white fenders I'll put on in the next few days, I wanted to get it out some and clear out that trace of crud coming out of the exhaust.
I'll post up some pics as soon as I figure how how!
