Hi all, been a while since I’ve been on the forum. Thought I’d share my latest project, and build in progress. I’ve had a few 200x’s and liked them but wanted more power, 350x and 250r’s are big money now, so I had to go the DIY route. This project started as a 2009 YZ250F that I bought as a basket case. Bike melted the piston down and scored up the small end of the rod. Must have been running really, really lean or got a bad tank of gas and knocked its way to death. I rebuilt it with a yammi oem crank, 290 big bore and SS valve kit. Runs awesome! Lights up a lot quicker than the regular 250f’s of this era and pulls hard.

Got the itch for a suspended trike again and decided to do it myself. I run my own machine shop and have a lathe and CNC mills, so modding parts isn’t too hard! Bought a 1st gen 200x hub and wheel, a set of 98-04 Honda Valkyrie GL1500 triples and got to measuring. The GL1500 triples needed to be modded as follows: lower triple needed to be opened up to YZ fork diameter, and the YZ stem pressed in. The gl1500 and YZ stem are the same diameter. I milled the steering stops off the triple and the steering lock too. Top clamp is the correct diameter for YZ forks, but needed the steering stem hole opened up for the YZ stem.

The 200x hub got narrowed on the long (non brake) side. For a front axle, a 78 Yamaha xs1100 rear axle is almost a direct fit, only needing the large end turned down to fit in the YZ fork. To get all these parts assembled I ran Honda F3 front wheel bearings (same diameter as the 200x hub and accepts the Yamaha xs1100 axle) as well as the F3 seals. I machined axle spacers and a new center hub spacer to keep everything centered and the bearings preloaded. I haven’t ironed out the front brakes yet, but it looks like I’m going to run a single piston caliper and the stock 200x disk with a custom bracket to get everything to fit. I’ll cross that bridge soon.

The rear end is another story. I picked up an 04 YFZ 450 swing arm and complete subframe setup and got to measuring. The swingarm needs to be narrowed quite a bit to fit into the yz frame. I can dig through my notes and see how much I milled off. After it was narrowed I installed a YZ bearing set and seals, and turned some spacers to act as thrust washers to keep the arm from walking around. I had to space the rear sprocket over almost 3/8” and also ran a 06-20 KX250F front sprocket with some light machining to get the chain aligned. The yfz linkage and shock run smaller bolts than the YZ stuff so you have to machine bushings.

The yfz subframe needs some way of bolting up to the yz frame, so I had a buddy burn out a few brackets so I could bend them up and drill to fit the subframe.

That’s about where the project sits at the moment. About 1/2 way to test riding, but figured I’d share with y’all as motivation to get it done. I’m located in Michigan and want to get it finished up over the winter so I can be ready to go come springtime. Long term plan is to swap everything over to a 450 once it’s proven out. We’ll see! Yea keep us updated ! Yea it’s handy having mill’s and lathe’s handy when crossbreading parts. How’s the rake with those triples ?

Rake is at 25 degrees and trail is right around 3.5”

Front tire is a 22x7x11. I’m hoping I can shave the trail down a little or steepen the rake to reduce it. Don’t want the steering to be too heavy.

Nice build.There is a guy on YouTube I think his channel is trimotoman I think he's in Washington he builds alot of Yamaha bike to trike conversions.You should check him out .

Even if there is no mill or lathe, having half a brain to use a digital calipers and do simple math can get someone into building something. Most people years ago needed to figure stuff out to build something. Now days people just want to buy it now and complain about the price...there is a reason convenience costs. Good luck on the build. It becomes an addiction. I work in an ISO certified machine shop and know a good bit, just do not run machines all the time. Knowing how to thing is half the battle.

Very true! Seems like everyone wants USA quality at Chinese prices with Amazon delivery times lol doesn’t work that way. Once someone has turned some hand wheels and knows how much time goes into making something they get a lot more realistic.

Finally a roller. Yfz link is on, spacers had to be made so a smaller bolt (yfz diameter) could be used on the yz frame. Found some paddles off a Polaris for cheap and redrilled them to fit the yfz pattern.270914270915

The rake don’t look to bad sitting there but how much does it change when there is a rider on it? Either way it’s looking good :beer

The trike settles a couple inches with me on it, I’ll get some hard numbers once I dial the rear spring in. I’m playing the game of trying to preserve as much of the suspension travel as I can without it being top heavy and tippy, and I’ve got the subframe as far down as I can without the seat fitting weird or the air box boot popping off the carb.

Need some opinions on what front fender to run, seems like everyone runs the 86-87 200X style but I’m kind of partial to the 350X or 250R style. You tell me what you think would look best!

DO not be like everyone else, run tecate 86 fender, let them think. Everyone runs the 2nd gen 200x due to BVC, them guys are not thinking and just following like sheep. Keep doing what your doing. This sets us guys appart from BVC. I can't stand them look at me guys...

Decided on a white 350X fender. The yz numberplate matches the raised portions of the 350x fender profile the best (although not perfect) compared to the 250r fender. It’s also a hair less coverage than the 86-87 200x fender but not bad.

Also picked up an oem yfz450 muffler as they’re made out of steel and a lot easier to cut and weld (for me) compared to something SS or Ti. The yfz 450 pipe has a few aggressive bends in it that I have to shorten up slightly but nothing crazy. It bolts up to the rear support fine, just needs to be tipped up in the front to look right. I will say the stock yfz muffler weighs a ton so I may have to see what all can be yanked out of the inside without raising too much suspicion for the authorities :naughty:

I did a very similar build 5 years ago, and that’s all I ride now. 13 inches of nice soft suspension and electric start make you spoiled real fast( I used a WR450 bike ).
A couple things to consider are extending the axle 3” per side and big foot pegs from a quad. They made a big difference for me .

Haven’t given up on this build! Next round of parts are on their way, will be machining up a custom front caliper bracket to attempt to stuff a single piston caliper up there for now. These triples are really narrow which makes getting a dual piston in there a really tight squeeze. Looks like a Yamaha ttr230 chain slider will fit the yfz arm with some light massaging, we update once it’s mounted. Also have a 90’s yz250 kicker in the mail which should be a few inches shorter than the yzf stuff and clear the rear fenders without a bunch of trimming
