View Full Version : 200X rear wheels

I've got two sets of wheels (no tires yet) for the 200X I'm building. One set is the stockers, the other is a set of 9x9 ITP wheels that adds about 4 inches total width. Is the wider/larger wheel advantageous for trail riding? I have only ever had hard tails so the bigger/balloony tires are what I'm used to since they are kind of the suspension. The trails I ride here in NH can be tight, almost none are smooth and they are littered with rocks, roots, mud, water etc, pretty much no real open space aside from some of the gravel logging roads. I know I can use 400EX hubs on the stock wheels to get some width, I have stock hubs currently, so I guess the real question is does the width and diameter increase really make much of a difference? I don't think I'll have trouble fitting between stuff as my 200S has plenty of space, and most of the ATV trails are wide enough for the big 4x4 lazy boy quads to get through without issue.

NH trails........ rode some trails up there with 20" tires a few years ago and if i had to do it again i'd purchase some 22" knobby tires. no way 18's. Make sure u run w/ skidplates. Wide rear end trikes u gotta remember if u ride tight trails like we do in MA (lots of trees waiting to snag u) that extra couple inches hanging out could surprize u quickly and not in a good way. Oh ya and the extra width will get u wet riding through puddles the rear fender doesnt help when tires stick out past them.

Yeah they are really bumpy for the most part lol. I’m building aluminum skids, just welded some new bigger mounts on the swinger the other day. I have some 1/4 aluminum left over from a rally skid plate so I was going to use that.

I was going to get 22s but more wondering if the inch of diameter matters on a soft tail, or if the width would be better for handling etc.
