Hi from the uk, I have a 82 185s that I'm restoring and could use some advise on the front sprocket . I bought it as a wreck have no idea what the previous owners did to it as it was a wreck but I was a bit surprised that the front sprocket was just held on with a circlip on the end of the driveshaft and no stop at all on the engine side , is this how it is supposed to be ? My sprocket has three threaded holes for a retainer if it ever had one at all?

The front sprocket was held on by a clip that was bolted to the sprocket. I believe that they are discontinued. When I had my xr600, the front sprocket was held on the output shaft by the same method that you described. I never had an issue with the chain rubbing on the cases. I'm working on a 1983 185s at the moment, I'm going to run the xr200 front sprocket with the 2 bolt retaining clip.

See the f you can download the parts fiche. That, and the workshop manual help connect the dots where prior owners have taken “liberties” in Their repair and upkeep activities.
