The way a lot of these viruses work is that they will get into a persons address book, and send emails from one person in the address book to another in the address book. The actual person with the virus doesnt show in the email. One board member probably has the virus, and those of you receiving these emails are probably in his address book.

recently I keep getting refinancing offers for my house. Problem is, I don't have one. Used to be not long ago I got invites from strange women and some that seemed like they came from gay men. I just toss them away since I am never more than mildly happy. Except when I am riding my trike I suppose. Then I would rate my happines as being....elated. :D

I get this virus sent to me a few hundred times a week. It averages 1-2 per hour. Such emails are helped along by people that don't run a anti virus program. These are the same people that complain when they get infected with a virus.
I was getting over 300 junk emails a day. How ever lately I have been using mailwasher ( www.mailwasher.com ) along with the free junk mail filter that bright.net provides me. Any spam that gets through the one gets caught in the other. I just simply bounce the email back. I have cut the junk email back to 50 or less a day now.
Viruses: My ISP filters 99.99% of the viruses out of my email ( for free ). They use Mc Afee to do this. To be better protected I run Nortons on my personal computer. Every email is scanned a total of 3 times before I can view it. My days of getting a virus are pretty much gone. I just checked my web based email filter. It shows I had 11 viruses sent to me since 10:20 Pm last night. They are always slow at night.
Here is another one to watch out for: Lately I have been getting emails that say: RE: Question for seller -- Item #281699565 . My advice is if you do not have a GOOD anti virus program then do not open it. This could be a infected email. The item number always seems to change for each email. I look at the number and if it isn't any number I know then I delete it.
How it seems to work lately: You open the email and another window pops open. This is a infected web page. The virus is built into the page and gets loaded onto your computer. Without a GOOD anti-virus program you could get infected. I run Nortons and it has caught a few of them that the wife had opened. She no longer opens any with such a title. ;)

Reread my post. The person it is "from" is not necessarily infected. All this means is that whoever IS infected has both you and Howdy in their address book, and its also most likely someone who uses Outlook or Outlook Express.

These viruses also scan through files for email address it can send itself to. Everytime someone that has the virus views the forum, that particular page is cached onto their computer. The virus will then read this file for any email addresses (And theres always some because people usually list their email addresses which show up on everypost) The virus then emails itself to those address. I'm not sure how the current one is working, but the Klez virus from a while back searched text files, cached webpages, and even intstant messenger programs for email addresses it could send itself to. Its well beyond just the address book now.

You guys who are getting these e-mails better update your virus software pronto. They are all variants of the DOOM virus, particularly the I-Worm Beagle and I-Work netsky.

My internet provider has a Virus/spam control...It catches about 200 spam and virus a day...Along time ago a computer person told me to set up a your own email address in your address book...If you ever get a virus that sends itself out you will know it because it sends an email to you...Then you can take the steps to get rid of it...Dont know if it works, havent had it happen yet... :D

I have 4 email accounts. 2 of the 4 have never been posted on the internet. I use them for comunication to and from the shop from home. If this actually works then I know for sure I haven't sent out any viruses. How do I know? The shops computer has never had a single virus sent to it. And I have never gotten one from that email address either. ;)

Well I have only one computer and the only way I would know is if my computer emailed itself....If you have 2 that you only use between work and home I wouldnt worry about those...The other 2 I would try it and see if anything happens...I wouldnt hurt....Hell everyone try it and maybe we could pin down the person....I would like to see if it works... ;)

I use my regular email account to the shop. So the email addresses are all in my main account. If I was to send a virus email out it would send it to the shop also. It has never happened so far. ;)
