well i went on a great duning expedition for spring break and on my last day i am out riding and i cannot for the life of me remember if i turned the gas on. i thought to myself..."well its been 10 mins of riding i can't run that off the carb". so i thought nothing ouf it, we get to the end of the rideable dunes and we stop to let the motors cool down. i look down and the damn thing is OFF  :D ........umm question is why does this petcock do that?

your gonna have to be a little more clear i think but do you mean you turn the petcock on then when you ride it for a bit it vibrates to the off position..if this is what you mean here is what you do:

drain the fuel from the tank and remove all the nuts/bots holding thetank to the frame then take off the fuel line. Remove the bolt Holding the cover of the petcock on and put a new O ring in their to give it more resistance to turn. All it is, is the vibration turning it so just replace the oring inside the petcock.

Probably still fuel in the bowl. It will stall after time for not having a constant flow of fuel.

Your valve is leaking through when it is in the off position. My trx 250r and 1 of my atc 250r's do the same thing. On the atc the rubber part inside is torn, and lets fuel seep by. Have not took the one in the trx apart yet.

I know my old air cooled R seemed like it ran forever when i had the valve turned off, but would die eventually., although in your case its most likely the gasket/rubber is old and worn out and letted fuel get by
