Hi guys,
Came across this great idea (in my mind). I have included a link below :) The state is Iowa, which the wife and I have thought about moving to. Anyone with comments please chime in  As for the idea, they pay a 'fee' and they rent/lease land to have a place to ride. Most cities have land they will NEVER build for whatever reason, and this is great. They also use land rented/leased by the military too. Anyways, enjoy the read. Comments on the state (from people whom live there) and the idea are welcome. Something to chat about :)

I don't understand. What's your idea? The link is just about registration.

Right, by reading on, the state and/or city has set aside land just for riding :D . Did you see the pictures? Nice to see a state adding land for OHV riding instead of taking away!

I view any registration scheme with extreme sketicism, and ill expalin why. First they come up with a fee based registration system, and all these ideas about how the funds collected will be used to build a public trail system. Then when they have you registered, they start adding additional premit fees , and insurance requirements. Then 5 years later, its costing you a bundle just to make your offroad machines legal to fulfill all the state's requirements, and it become so complicated you need a lawyer to figure out the system for you. On top of that, state budgets are hurting, so you find all of your registration money is going into social programs, and not a dime has been spent of trails aquisition or development.
Maybe some of you guys from states that have seen this happen can chime in!

It's a two part deal. Remember when it said registration, well, thats through the state. The other 'club' part, you might be right, they charge $15 for newsletters, etc. Its a non-profit orginization. I actually got the link from city hall :D employee they hand out this link when people want information on OHV. If it's not on the "up&up" you would think they (city) wouldn't hand it out  As for bringing Atc's up to 'code'. I know California has special rules for older Atc's, etc. on sound DB and other things. I also thought I saw something about pre-2001 Atv's on there too. Which means, they (states) are taking into account the year, etc.
Again, sounded like a good idea. Wanted to pass it on and get some feedback :D

PS. Forgot, the site showed where money went. Fences, bathrooms, etc. Which is great!

A couple years ago, the state of Iowa took $750,000 out of our registration fund to use for other things. They had no intention of repaying it until there was an uproar. Now they say they'll try to pay it back over the next five years. I'll believe that when I see it.

What are good areas there and bad?

Forgot to ask, what did the OHV lose out on?

that 750 thousand they took out also eliminated a new park that was set to go in by elkader, and think there were a couple other parks and trails that were going to become legal for atvs to travel on. far as them paying the money back i highly doubt it will happen anytime soon. the trail in waterloo i heard is really nice, but requires all the registration to be there. there is one by ely (cedar rapids) that is rougher but allows everything from bikes to trikes to quads to buggies to any vehicle u feel likey playing in the mud hills and sand in

That is where Wife wants to move to is Cedar Rapids. Nice there (city)? So, there are palces where Atc's AREN'T allowed? What about exhaust systems. The kids have those DG pipes on there?

cedar rapids is a nice place, around 120,000 population (guessing). as far as I am aware trikes are not banned from any of the ohv parks in iowa. I live in waterloo and ride at the park here quite often, and I think its pretty nice, but its really the only state run place that I have been to.

where are you moving from? and when do you plan on moving? just curious. I think you will like CR, theres plenty to do there and Iowans are nice folks for the most part. ---Joe

i may have heard wrong but u had to have everything all registered to ride at the state parks and if u didnt the dnr would write u up. in ely they didnt do anything to us and we had a go cart and four trikes and 10 quads in our group. didnt take any of the truck out on the trail but could have as well. and they didnt enforce the helmet and goggle issue the time i was there, may have changed by now but doubt it has as it is the army corps that own this land by ely

you are correct nickel, in waterloo you have to be titled and registered and wear a helmet but trikes are still allowed. dont know about ely though.

Both the kids Atc's are titled and registered and current. What about their DG mufflers? Legal?

honestly on the muffler I dont know. I am running an answer silencer without a spark arrester and have never given it much thought. In the fifty or so times that I have been to the waterloo park I have yet to see any DNR on site checking for anything (although Ive heard stories of them doing crackdowns Ive never seen one). I also had to have my trike inspected by the DNR when I first purchased it because it was untitled and unregistered and they didnt ever ask me to start it (I figured they would have for noise reasons). I think they are more concearned with atv theft than wheather or not you meet safty regulations. Ill be sure to post if I ever get a ticket LOL!

well Iowa gets tornados, but they seem to be kind of fond of farm houses and trailer courts. :D
