I spoke too soon when I said I had no problems with the '86 sx. Now my electric start isn't working. I washed the trike and it hasn't worked since so I'm assuming water is somewhere it shouldn't be but it's been over a week! I can kickstart it no problem and then when I shut it off, the neutral light stays on. When I hit the start button, I hear a "pop" from somewhere near the battery and the neutral light stays off. When I kick start it again, it "resets" itself and I can try the starter again. over and over and nothing. This sounds like a common problem with the sx so has anyone dealt with it? Thanks, Yater

Sounds like a bad battery connection. When you say you turn it off and the neutral light stays on do you me your turn the ket of or by the kill switch it self? I would start with cleaning our battery terminals first and if that don't work you will have the test light out to find out where your losing power.

Check the wires and sensor for the nuetral. The sensor is in the bottom, back of the right side crankcase cover. My sensor is just loose, if I move the wires going to it around, then my nuetral light will come on and I can use the electric start with no problem. I figured this out by kickstarting; the machine would move enough that it would just flash the nuetral light.
I never had mine go "pop" though.

I figured it out. After trying over and over to find where the "pop" was coming from, I noticed a scorched bolt on the connection at the negative terminal. I shaved the wire and put a new splice on it and it's fixed. Thanks everyone, Yater

I fugred it was only a bad conection at the battery. The pop is what it sounds like when you have choose then loose it all of the sound. I am glad you where able to locate the problem fairly easily.
