I'm the 3rd owner of this 1985 1/2 Tri-Z. I've not been able to figure out why the airbox cover is red while every other black Z has a black airbox cover. I know that the 86 Zs had a red airbox cover, but this isn't an 86.
The cover has the same amount of scratches and fading as the other plastics, so if it's not original then it was replaced early on or is original.
Does anybody know if any 85 1/2s came with a red airbox cover like mine or was mine replaced with an 86 part when the trike was very new. Any ideas?

Are you sure its an '85 airbox?. It might have been replaced since the '86's was a better breathing unit (at least thats what I've heard). Check the part number out on the box itself.

I think hes talking about the cover only. Yes it is an 86 cover and most likely it was replaced early on.
I was a youngster when the Tri Z's came out and I recall the 85.5 model and then the red and white 86. In none of my magazines did I ever read anything about a special edition with the red airbox cover.
You know what might look really awesome...get some red radiator shrouds....that would look great. Like a black 86 model!
I think it looks awesome! I love the way that looks.
Congrads on the awesome Tri z....
my 86:

I like the 85 Yellow Z with red airbox cover and red seat!

They're "weird" because they're not Yamaha parts. They are my work in progress. I wanted something a bit more curvy looking - sort of like from a newer Honda CR.
