Well traveled up north a little ways to my friend's dad's house in Northbranch MI(1 1/2 hour drive). The truck runs great all 180 miles of the weekend (suprising). On my way home with my trike in back, a MI state cop pulls me over. I was going 50 on the highway because the truck isn't the most stable at speed. So the dick pulls me over. He's asking us all these questions about weed, and alcohol (being a dick as usual, which is to be expected). He's wondering about the trike, and the truck and why I have expired plates. LUCKLY I had the trike title with me(otherwise it'd be impounded), and I had the truck title with me, and insurance on the truck. I tried to explain to the officer why I did not have paltes yet because I jsut bought it, and haven't been able to get them, and I was taking the truck home, and that I had that plate on there because that's the plate I was going to use. He didnt care, handed me my ticket for expired paltes (misdimeanor), and also told me I have a brake light out and a cracked winshield and that he could tow my truck if he wanted. I then asked him what I was supposed to do because I have to have the truck home, and he's like "park it untill it has paltes that simple." I then asked him about a law that says as long as you have insurance and the title with you you could drive the vehicle because you cannot get to a state office for whatever reason, and he ignored me and sent me on my way. To top it off he cut me off trying to get off the expressway about a mile down the road from where he stopped me. I was so mad/pissed off and could not understand why I got the ticket i wanted to cry but I couldn't. So now I have yet another ticket. If thats not an asshole I don't know what is. As far as I'm concerned all cops ARE ASSHOLES. And I stand firmly. When I got home my mom's friend told me about how her son got a ticket for flipping his truck because he hit some ice on the road and lost control, the cop told him and his mom he "has to give him a ticket because there was an accident and there was an insurance claim of more than $400.00. WTF is this world coming to????

ok so what the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro?? its the cops fault your driving the truck with bad tags on it? ever hear of a tow truck? or temp tags? so you can move vehicles without being stopped  ? the rest of the stuff is also YOUR fault! You have a bad window, lights.. and you blame the cop! Now that is assanine! And if you hit me on the road and had bad tags, and all of those problems, hopefully you would have insurance.. Your final comment was more stupid then the rest, the cop issued a ticket to someone that hit ice and flipped his car? No, probaly was driving too fast for conditions, or like an asshole, and almost killed himself and others... grow up!

well he was ok in what he did but like most cops he has his panties in a bundle and was being an ass

I did fail to mention that my brake light does work, and the co pwas jsut being a dick yet again. The winshield cracking isn't of anyone's concern, and how many people do you know with cracked winshield's? I can think of 5 or 6 of the top of my head. Besides that I have insurance on it and that's what's important. Now waht difference does it make weather I have tags or not if I'm in an accident? Its still going to be my name on the ticket. Also, I have NEVER herd of trmpoary tags to move a vehicle. I will look into this in-depth monday.
As for the flipping of a vehicle, to really explain the entire story I would have to type another page. There is no possible way a 2 wheel drive S-10 can make it up a hill with snow and ice on the road (approximatley 1/10 ofa mile as I'm told by his mom) and reach a speed of more than 45 mph. Now the road speed limit is 55, and for the conditions 35 was safe and he was supposedly going 30 or less.
So are you a cop skippy? because it sure sounds like you are, instantly taking the cops side of the story. If not I bet your a fireman.

As for the ticket, I HOPE that I can send proof that I registered the truck and won't have to pay a fine or have this go on my record. If I get a fine and points on my record then thats a load of horseshit.

1. you drove a truck that you knew was illegal.
2. you got a ticket.
3. it sounds fair to me.
4. why dont you go to court over it and cry to the judge about it???
skippy
12-22-2002, 12:41 PM
yes, im a cop, have been for 7 years.. (in the city that "bleeds"),, and yes the cop seems fair to me.. they do have temp tags, to move vehicles to and from inspection stations.. cops dont issue tickets unless they know they are right,... why would you? i have encountered numerous situations like you have described.. all of the vehicles were towed.. why? because if they(you) drive down the street and cause a crash, its the cop's ass.. also as far as any insurance companies go, if your vehicle is not "registered" or you license is not valid, even if you get in a crash, and its not your fault, it will be, because you werent suppose to be on the road.. (go to court, if you thk you are right, the judge will surely lower or drop fines for most of the stuff,, why not,. the cop doesnt care either way., and you can save yourself some money).. my 2 cents.. (o in case you are wondering,, yes i love atc's have over 11 bikes, now and have been riding on them since 1982.. so does that still make me a dick like the rest of the "cops"? well come meet me.,. i thk you will see im very fair!

"Ride it like you stole it! And never look back! They are too far behind to see!"
Skippy in your singnature who is "they" the guy you stole from or the cops (co workers) chasing you?
Do you register and insure your trikes?
Dont take the quote to heart Im just breaking balls, I aint got a problem with cops as long as they leave me alone. But I am curious if a law inforcer makes sure all of his many trikes are legal, and goes through all the BS to make sure that his trikes arent stolen?
skippy

yepper... that signature means i ride hard.... like i said ive been on 3 wheels for a long time.. and love it... 4 is a big change for me... i also run my vin numbers on my bikes and frames to make sure they are good to go.. i also get the titles with the bikes, or apply for and get new titles for them.. as far as insurance goes in maryland.. if you dont ride on dnr property you dont need to register or insure.. i only carry policies on the bikes i know i will keep forever, (because of the costs, of the insurance and the bikes), trx 86, 85 250r, 86 250r, 85 350x, 86 350x,... the rest dont have policies, my home owners insurnance says they will cover the "parts, motors, etc, i have laying around, but not vehicles,, so i figured im pretty well covered, and try to get into my garage... humm.. doberman, and a shepard would love to have you over, along with smith wesson, and all the other brands! :)...

o yeah, let me add... when i hear of a bike stolen from someone.. i work my hardest to find it and get it back to the person,, also when we find them, i do everything i can to help out the owner/operator,,, (trust me im for atc/atv owners, and its a HUGE interst of mine... ask the wife... ugh.. anyway, if i can ever help someone with the legal end of it.. let me know.. chris d.. has been very cool with helping me with stuff i couldnt do, or advice with the 250r's,, and always willing to help others!

In an effort not to offend anyone, but I think that cop was being a cock and I have been pulled over for nothing by guys like that myself. Not all cops are bad, because i have been pulled over for brake lights out, headlights out and license plate lights out and they are nice about it, they just pull me over, see if I have my license and let me know the problem and send me on my way, because the sop knows it's nobody's fault and no reason for a ticket. But then their are they guys that pull me over just because of what I'm driving. Like the time I got pulled over for not wearing a seat belt in my cobra Stang. Well, it was getting dark and in a rainstorm so i don't know how he was able to see in my car and notice my seatbelt wasn't on, even though it was. And he kept telling me it wasnt. That guy was an ass. Then when I was pulling a trailer of quads to the dunes this summer in my truck which has a healthy motor and noisy Flowmasters. Well this dude pulled me over at first going 72mph in a 55, NO WAY. I was going 58 or 59 tops and i told him no way. I got attitude with him and I said that if he wrote me up I'd fight him on it and i had 3 other witnesses so he forgot about the speed, then he had a problem with 4 people being in my truck, but we showed we all had seatbelts on, then we had a problem with my insurance card which was his mistake, and finally had me start up the truck because he was trying to get me for excessive noise. Bottom line, that dude just wanted to be an ass. In Hemi's case I feel thesame way. You just bought your truck and are waiting for plates, why does he care? Why could he have a problem with your trike? That's stupid. I think that guy just saw a young fella in a big truck with an old trike and wanted to get you. Skippy and mustang Chris, this isnt' directed at you because Skip and Chris' dad may be the good guys, but you have to admit that their are some ego trippin cops out there that just make things worse for people. Because I a nice cop would have just told hemi to get the truck home and new tags beforehe drove it again.

well, well, I have an interview at the local PD in january, and Im not 100% sure I would do it, but just mabey.... You see, its a job I have always wanted to do, and I think its time for a career change. Now, That Trooper could have "gave you a break" but I bet he didn't because of your cocky attitude. It makes me laugh when "the average joe" thinks he is Johnny Cochran, super lawer. :D I hope I get this job, Im not a ball buster, believe me. Anyone can tell if the person they pull over for a minor infraction "deserves" a summons. The last 2 times I got pegged for speeding, I got a warning, and when I got popped on state land on a trike, carrying a handgun, I got this "you oughtta just get home" So you see, its not the officer that is the jerk, you get what you deserve, Cops put thier pants on one leg at a time, same as everyone else, and they just punch the clock like everyone else. some are lenient on certain issues like ATV's because they are enthusiasts, lilke SKippy, others are not, and you take your chances running into an enthusiast or an ATV hater. Not only cops ride and not only cops hate ATVs

well things sure got heated didn't they??? i can go both ways, i have been pulled over mainly because of what i was driving instead of what i was doing. case in point; i left a ballgame one night in a small town but didn't quite make it out of town before i was pulled over. now listen there was no speeding, weeving, revving or anything. the fellow came up to me and told me this (i pulled u over because I KNEW U WERE GOING TO NAIL IT AFTER U WENT OVER THE RAILROAD TRACKS) nothing else, then the tipical safety inspection which i have had dozens of. but like i said i have had officers do some work for me and helped me out in situations. because of what i drive (68 chevy nova) i was a good target. i believe there are two kinds of officers and u can rub both of them the wrong way.

If there aren't any dick cops out there I haven't been pulled over, or have met one yet. And that's saying a lot because I have problems with cops time after time for some reason. I have to believe it's because I'm young.
Also G-man, aren't posts deleted that are all written in caps? and if it were you in your truck with your trike without plates and insurance would you WANT your truck and bike to be towed? Oh I forgot, you don't have a trike.

The ATc part in my main post wasn't as important to me as the rest of the stuff, but I psoted it anyway. I live in MI, and I don't know where the city "that bleeds" is. I am going to check into the Michigan laws Monday.

I can see what Trikaholic is saying but I don't really agree entirely due to the fact that I have been pulled over for nothing before and trust me, the guy had decided way before he flipped his lights on that he was going to be an ass. I have never given a cop "attitude" until he starts lying to my face about what i had done. Example: If he says I was doing 72 in a 55 when I was really doing 59 tops, I will argue with him. If he says my truck is too loud, I say prove it. And no, I have never exuded any Johnny Cochrane. Any cop that is straight with me with no BS, i get along with fine and never have been ticketed by one. But the ones that have ticketed me knew they were going to be bastards before they even got to my window. On the same token, I have gotten two tickets and I didnt try to get out of either one of them nor did I go lawyer on a cop because I knew that I desreved what I was getting. I've gotten 2 tickets for speeding, once was a 69 in a 55 and the other was a 45 in a 30 and both times the cop pulls me over and asks " do you know why I pulled you over?" and I look at him/her, grin and say, " because i was exceeding the designated speed limit?" and they say you bet! i have even gotten out of one before because he goes " you know what you did?" I said yeah I was going to fast." and he goes well at least you're honest, slow it down and that was it. What a cool guy he was! But I get pulled over almost on a weekly basis in my truck because it is big, rumbly and very hot roddy.

Gee, the nerve of that cop to pull you over just for having expired tags! How stupid! Of what concern of his is it that you are flagrantly violating the law in your state. Just because it was illegal when he pulled it over, doesnt mean you didint intend to make it legal some day, and he should have known that. It was obvious you had just bought it and were driving directly home from purchasing it (with your ATV in the back). Cops have no business running around hassling people just because they happen to be breaking the law. Just because we call them law enforcement officers, does not mean they should be out there enforcing the law. Where in the world do they get off in perverting logic in their twisted minds into thinking that their job is to cite lawbreakers? It is quite obvious that your are an upstanding, pillar of the community, who just happened to accidentally, unknowingly breaking the law, and any cop who would cite you for that it just being an a-hole.
WHO CARES!.... YOU GOT PULLED OVER.... GET OVER IT!

After this comment I will be eliminating myself from this argument. The point isnt that he got pulled over. The point is that some officers have to be asses for no reason other than they can. At least that's the point that I was led to recognize. And i totally agree having been harassed numerous times. And it's not the getting pulled over thing that really bothers me, it's the fact that it almost always takes about 15 minutes for the guy to get his rocks off trying to penalize me and here is what that has an effect on: More than once it has made me late for work and bosses don't buy the "I got pullled over" excuse when it happens that often. It has also made me late when meeting my girlfriend for dinner on our anniversary. She doesnt like to be kept waiting. Now I don't know what Hemi's argument is exactly, but here's mine. It is really stupid that a hungry cop can pull over anybody for no reason with the intent just to make trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro up to write a ticket about. And I really think that some of them try to get you to be mouthy so they have an excuse. And you know what, I am an upstanding pillar of my community, I ain't perfect but I'm as close to it as you can get, J/K, and it pisses me off because I have better things to do than haggle with a dickhead with a badge. And once again, no offense to Skip or Chris because the good guys are greater than the bad ones, but around here there are a couple of bad ones that by now I am on a first name basis with. on the other hand, now that I am getting older it isnt nearly as bad. It was mostly when i was 16 and first driving up until about a year ago.

ok, lets put it this way, the world is FULL of A-holes. I think I have a good example.
In my current profession, I come in contact with a lot of construction company personell, from many different companies. Every one of them is super nice, blue collar type of people, except for ONE. For 11 months, this guy has been rude, combative, and refused to do his job, when I (or someone from my company) asked him for assistance. While I was talking to his home office one day, I mentioned that I (we) do not like to conduct business with people like this guy, and I (we) would not provide our services or products EVER to this person (he bought from our competitor anyway). Five minutes later, I get a call from the "guys" boss, and the "guy". To make a long story short, I told them there was no reason to break balls like he did, and I, or anyone else, does NOT need or deserve to be treated that way by anyone, in the course of performing their job. This is what the "boss" said....."I dont know how many construction workers you deal with on a daily basis, but thats the way we are" or something to that effect. Now give me a break. I laughed right at the guy, and told him "That is rediculous, and a pretty lame excuse" So, you see, some people, cops and apparently construction workers, feel they have the right to be an A HOLE because of their occupation. Now I could say now that " I hate construction workers" but I wont say that, I will say I certainly dislike that person, and the moral of the story is that there are jerks everywhere, this construction guy caused me more trouble than any cop ever did, and yes, when I was younger, I had a cop after me, too. He had a personal thing for me, and thats another story,(about 10 years ago) but I just kept my nose clean, and stayed out of his way, just like I will avoid this construction dick head.

well im not disagreeing with out that there are dickhead cops out there,,, just like anyother job, and certainly because your a cop you can "bother" people more,, all i was stating earlier was the the fact that the cop was justifed in what he did, i have imposed more and difficult sancations upon people for the exact same violations... as far as driving the truck without tags, check with your state, i know your insurance would most likely cover your trip, but that is up to each and every insurance carrier, i work in baltimore city, md... in case anyone was wondering.. also i thk there were alot of valid points discussed in most of the posts, but try to see things from an independant view..i thk we have alot of different age groups on the boards, and because of that you get alot of different opinions...

Last time I checked the consititution, cops dont find people guilty or impose sentences, or send people to jail, or impose fines. Only a judge can do that, and if you disagree with your citation, the court is the place to make your arguement. Im curious as to how many of you who feel youve been "unjustly cited" by a "dickehead cop" go to court and argue your case, and how many just admit guilt, pay the penalty, and then get on here and argue your case where its sounds better because the other side cant be heard. If they do actually go to court, why is it we dont hear about the "dickhead judges" and "Kangaroo courts" who actually impose the penalties? Police officers do no, and cannot impose penalties. When people openly demonstrate total ignorance of this, it really shoost theri credibility in making the rest of their argument. Cops can impound a vehicle to take it off the road, but they cannot hold the vehicle without an order from the court. If the cops impounded a vehicle and determined it would be held for a month, then go sue them. You have an easy case.

sure, it may come down to one person's word against anothers... but if you have your ducks in a row, and put doubt into the judges head, he will find you not guilty... if the cop "dummys" up a ton of bad tickets, the judge will surely throw them out... right , so why would a cop do that? it kills the crediabilty of the cop... so that doesnt happen, i can tell you most (99.9%) cops wont write a ticket, unless they know they will win when they come to court... why would have?? they make more money or something? no.. there is no benefit to the cop..

I think Big Mike understands what I'm getting at. I did not read everyone's post on the way here, but Monday I looked into some laws. First, anyone with a liscence that buys a vehicle can LEGALLY drive it directly home within 3 days of the purchase and nowhere else with no plates AND NO INSURANCE. Second there are tempoary tags that are $14.00 and are good for 10 days.
I had insurance and told the cop I had bought it Friday and it was Saturday and I was going home. I'm fighting the ticket of course. Anyone who thinks I deserve what I got, well no I didn't. I'm glad we have this law in Michigan.
