I personally think it's good to have some parts handy. There is nothing worse than traveling say 5, 10, or more hours to go riding and have your machine break down and you can't get it fixed.
What I try to do to get ready for any ride is this: Make sure the machine is running the best rideable condition it possibly can be. I try to bring stuff to fix: brakes, levers, tires, bolts, chain, ect. It never fails that there will be a repair that will test your thinking and ability to repair it ( with minimal tools and parts ).
2 very good examples from last year:
Broken Clutch cable: 200xman ( I think ) has the end pop off his clutch cable. We had NO spare cables, No replacement ends, ect. But doing a little thinking ( ok , a lot of thinking ) we devised a reneck idea of fixing it. We modified a bolt and got the cable to work. We didn't think it would last more than 2-3 hours. But it worked the whole weekend.
Flat tire: This might go down as the most remembered repair. A guy from another camp site seen we was having good luck fixing everything thrown at us. At 2AM he brought a front tire ( quad ) that had a good size hole in the side wall. The tire rattled when rolled. This guy did have a tube but we didn't have the ability to break the bead on the tire. It took a couple people to do a little surgery on the tire. It didn't take long before everyone was scratching their heads. The picture below is of the tire. In the picture you can see a small pile of wood on the tire. All of this wood was removed from inside of the tire. It was removed carefully through the hole it went in. This tire was patched from the outside very carefully. The next morning these guys were riding once again.
FYI, the picture doesn't do justice. This was one nasty repair. But we was able to fix it. ;)

Yeah, that was my clutch cable. That repair even lasted a couple of more rides after I got home. :beer
