Well as usual i have beeen busy. Painting and the usual. I tore down a road bike yesterday that my dad found to get some bolts of it to replace any rusted motor bolts on this bigred. I did a bit more sandblasting on some motor parts today and am ready to paint the 2 side cases of the engine in an aluminuim colour...

I ordered a new set of tailights and a shifter seal the other day and then went and picked em up, i also had ordered a reverse thing (little button on lever that has a r on it) but they ordered the wrong thing and now im waiting on that to come in and also the seal for the rear drum brake, big round one.

I went over to my spring that was drying with a fesh coat of paint on it and saw some stuff on it, upon closer inspection i noticed it was some bird trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro, it hit it and went on every little coil! Damn thing  I had to clean it off and give it another coat of paint. Painted my tripple trees red and are ready for installment...

I had always been looking for a brochure for this bike and had never been able to locate on in aus. I emailed this guy who sells many brochures (guy that jez bought that 88 es one from) and he had an 85 brochure there for the 250es superred. I bought it for 4 buks. Kinda cool bit of atc history.

I am waiting to receive my tank decals and the warning ones also. A big thanks to Ric Hassler for them, who owns atcheaven.com
I also started to strip my tank today with paint stripper but i hate the stuff....wish i had some sand left to blast it :D

I am goign to need to get some plastic weldeing done sooner or later for the bottom of this toolbox, cause me being the idiot i am cracked the bottom out.

I still need to get all my fastners chromed and i need to do a fair bit more painting/cleaning. I have also got to get a new compliance sticker, fuse stickers, helmet holder stickers etc made up. Hopefully it wont cost too much.

Im outta money for now so it might take me a bit longer to get this rig up and ruinning again, nonetheless it will get running eventually and itll look great.

Heres some pics of some progress...

Looks good Matt. I have been doing the same to a 87 Big Red that I bought for $100. And it runs great. Then I got a 85 parts bike for $200. I Got my new fenders in yesterday and all new bearings for the rear. I had to buy a new axle, swingarm and axle housings for mine. Guy had hit someting pretty hard adn bent the crap out of the thing. Trike still drives fine. The left rear tire just wabbles about 1 to 2 ", and it leans to that side. The new swing arm should straighten it out. I sandblasted the frame and motor. and Stipped the tank and had it fixed up. I had it repainted at a shop last week for $50. PPG Base Coat Clear Coat Honda Passion Red. Tracking the paint code down was tough but Hondas 800 # fiixed me up. The shop also repainted the side covers for me. $50 what a deal. They guy had done some other work for me also. Im trying to find some decals for a 87, but as you can imagine they are tough to find. I met a guy on Ebay that is going to develope some stickers for me. He said if I would help him with the graphics, then I will get them at his cost. Hopefully I will get the swingarm assembly on there next weekend. Its been fun. I will have about $550 in it when im all done, and it will look cherry. Keep us posted on your project.

Hey Clay, good to hear your project is coming along well. I sure wish i had money for some new fenders. My cost is 600 buks and climbing so far....Mainly cause of the powdercoating....Would you be able to tell me the paint code for that red colour please? How did the tank turn out?

Have you got any pics of yur bike?

Later,

Matt

Hey Matt,

The paint code you would be needing is as follows.

The Honda paint code for Hondas Passion Red is : R109

R109 however is an acrylic enamel paint. Its not as tough as base coat clear coat. So I went with the better paint.

The PPG cross refferenced paint code for R109 is : 74718

This is the same color as R109 except its a basecoat / clearcoat paint job.
My tank and sidecovers came out unbelievable. The color is excellent and the shine is like glass. You can see your reflection in it. I will try and figure out how to upload pics tommorow. I will take some for ya. www.hyperparts.com has the rear fenders for $130 and the front for $58. And you can order the rear trunk lid straight from Maier-mfg for $38 shipped (US). Go check it out at www.maier-mfg.com

Thanks,

Only problem with the fenders is that shipping will be a killer since im in aussie. So with these paint codes where do i got to buy the paint? do i just say this is what i want can you order it?

I would think that you could call a bodyshop and ask them what and where the nearest paint supply shop is that carries PPG paint. I know that they sell the paint in europe. Porsche, BMW & Jaguar use the paint at the factory. PPG is the top of the line when it comes to paint. You would prob need a pint of paint a pint of clear and the reducer and hardner for them. This would run you about 40-60 bucks state side. Guess. All the shop had to buy was the red paint for me. They already had the clear and other reducer / hardner. Keep me posted. I will try to help any way I can.

Im not sure what your asking for. The paint can be used on any type of metal basically. Most of the time its used on cars, trucks, and bikes. Its very tough paint. If it gets scratched you can polish or buff the scratch out. You can even get some real fine sandpaper after it if you need to, then polish it back to a shine. Just dont sand throught the clear. If the scratch is too deep this wont work though. It has to be applied with a pneumatic spay gun. This stuff doesnt come in a spray can. Usually you Epoxy prime the surface the you put 3 or 4 coats or Base ( RED ) and then. 3 coats of clear. Then let it dry. Hope this helps.

Thanks Clay. I have been doing a bit of research on it and i have found that some people say it is poisonus and should not be used if you dont have a spray booth and mask? Is this true?

Do you have the paint code for the silver colour that is used on the lower fork legs?

Thanks,

Matt

Matt they are full of crap. Any paint can be harmfull to you if you inhale it enought. I have repainted a 944 Porsche with the stuff in my back yard. Residential area. Yes when I painted the car I wore a mask due to the number of hours it took to paint. If you are painting a gas tank or something else minor in size like a trike you wont have a problem. You may get a slight headache for a hour or so at the worst. But I doubt that. You definately, definately, dont have to have a booth. I just painted the grille in my sister in laws jeep last year in the back yd on a 50 gallon drum. No big deal, and no complaints from anyone. Im not going to lie its definately stronger smelling than say Krylon spray can paint. Dude if you have a paint gun and a air compressor you can do it. Trust me its not that bad of stuff. If it was you would have to have a license to buy the stuff. Like freon for AC's. I dont know the code for the silver paint. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Clay, you have been a big help. I think im going to enquire about this paint soon. Im going to get some aluminium colour stuff for the fork bottoms, rims and diff etc. Im also going to get red stuff for the tank, fork trees (yep im gunna repaint them with this other stuff if its tougher, but ill just paint over it i cant be bothered stripping it again) and the side covers. It sounds good and i have a compressor and a spray gun so ill go for it.

Again thanks for all the help.

Very nice Clay, You are a lucky SOB. Sometimes i wish i lived in america, parts availability is so much better than aus. Im doing this resto but am going to have to put shitty fenders on it bit of a shame, but what can ya do. Did you have that seat recovered?

I got my tank stickers and the tank warning stickers today in the mail. Look Great. I also got the shematics printed on about 200 sheets, it has the price of them and the part number also. Very Handy.

I now need to comletely strip my tank and paint it up. I think i might give paintign those side panels of mine red like you have. What preperation did you do before you sprayed them? Did you spray the backside also? What have you done to your airbox and stuff like that? Painted it or just cleaned it up. I sandblasted mine and now am kinda regretting it. It looks very dull.

Thanks Again,

Matt

Hey Matt,

I recoverd the seat myself. I bought a nice seatcover off of Ebay for $20. Got lucky no one else bit. It was real nice and not too bad to install. Turned out looking real good. As far as the sidecovers go, I just stripped the old stickers off and wet sanded the cover down with 400 grit sandpaper. After that I used some 3M grease and wax remover to wipe any crap off of them. Then Epoxy primered them. Then painted them. I wasnt sure about painting them at first, but they looked like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro. All pink lookin from the sun. Couldnt have them butting right up against a perfect looking Red tank. Would make the bike look bad. Im going to sell my front fender on Ebay and buy a new Maier one within a few weeks. Cant wait. I plan on working on my rear rack today. Got to get it repainted black. Its kinda faded and rusty in spots. This weekend im swapping out the swingarm. Hopfully next monday I can post some pics of the near finished product. Cant wait. :Bounce

Do you guys know if those paint codes for the red are good for all of the Honda ATCs (That were red)?

I'm wanting to paint my hubs red and want the same red as the rest of the bike.

Thanks

Those paint codes are the only Red honda uses. ( Honda Passion Red ) that is there staple color. Kinda like UPS Brown. Hey trailboss if you want that tire I will ship it to canada. I have never shipped up that way so I am unsure of the cost. I have a large UPS account at my office so we get a big discount. I will pass it on to you.

Sorry John,

Must of typo ed . I used PPG automotive paint. Whats used on new cars. Its Honda Passion Red. They primed it with automotive epoxy primer. Then painted it with the Red base coat. Its just the color with no shine. Then clear coated it for a great shine and gas and sun resistant finish.
