I have 2 questions:
1. Will a 86 ATC or 86-89 TRX 250R motor fit into my 85???
2. Is it typically hard to find neutral on the 85 R? If not, what could be causing it? It shifts really hard when I am sitting still. The clutch is adjusted properly -- but worn out?
Thanks!

1. Yes to all. The motors are all basically the same. 88/89 motors have the long rod which is supposed to make more torque. But the 85/86 are known to rev quicker.
2. Yes, while engine is running. When not running, its much easier or find neutral.
The hard shifting is probably because the shift drum is worn. This usually indicates alot of hard use or some bad shifting technique.

i found my r hard to find neutral and a bit hard shifting when it was in need of an oil change. maybe there is other problems but it seemed to work fine after that and is still working fine!!

Yea, the shift drum could be a problem, but mine is fine yet in my 86 250R. I would definitely be sure the clutch is working okay, as that can become a problem if misasdjusted, worn, or the steel plates are not true. Another thing too, is the clutch basket itself becoming worn. Barring the clutch, I would check the shift drum, and fork. the 88-89 motors had a longer rod, that's it. the cylinder height is slightly higher, but not enough to matter. they do make spacer plates to use an early cylinder with a long rod crank, also, but I am much happier with the short rod crank, because, as was said, it does rev a little quicker, and I like that snappiness.

If the hard to find neutral, and the hard to shift while sitting still problems disappear when you shut the motor off, its most likely grooves in the clutch basket, not letting it fully disengage.
