TimJr are planning our annual Badlands trip this year for Aug 11-15. Anyone is invited to join us, and the number of wheels you happen to be sporting doesnt much matter to me. We will arrive late Wednesady afternoon, early eve, and depart Sunday.
In the past we have always camped at Summers Carroll, but we are considering using the Badlands campgrounds this year. The obvious convenience of not having to trailer out each day is appealing. My only concern is nighttime noise from inconsiderate a-holes that seem so abundant. Thought maybe some of you might be able to give me some feedback. Are the campgrounds quiet at night, or can we expect to end up listening to car stereos blasting punk rap, and obnoxious piped ATVs revving all night?
Summers Carroll has always been super to us, kept it quiet, and the plus side of camping in shade, and having a pool available, and fishing (that we never seem to do). You also also pop the tab on a cold one by the fire in the evening. Not a deal-breaker for me, but nice.
Id be interested in hearing from those who have camped at the Badlands, and of course from those who may want to join us.

The campgrounds at badlands is normally pretty quiet. The good things are the location, and free showers......the only real bad thing is no alcohol is permited, (but a beer or 2 have been known to slip under the radar).

Looks like a few of us will be going to the badlands instead of silver lake. I checked out the site, read the rules and faqs. Am I reading right, you have to stop riding at 5pm and 6pm on the weekends? I might be bringing a couple friends along, the only problem they will have is the beer issue, (I will just keep that a secret until its to late to turn around, lol) I don't drink so its no worry to me. another thing, do I need to get the paperwork for my son to ride before hand, have it notorized before I get down there? We will probably camp on site, I really don't feel like loading up every day to go back to a campground. How is security there? if I bring more than one bike will I have to worry about leaving a machine at camp unattended? From what I can tell it looks like its about a three hour trip, not bad considering silver lake is almost two hours for me.

My kids and I might just be there too. We're planning a trip sometime this summer and that weekend would work as well as any.

The times are correct. In the past we always arrived shortly after opening, and by late afternoon we were well ready to head back to camp. They are very strict about the alcohol in the riding area, and sometimes even check coolers. Ive not stayed in their campgrounds before. If beer is an issue with your buddies, we always stayed at Summers Carrol campgrounds nearby, and they can conume freely when the riding day is over. The only downside is trailering in and out each day. They could probably even leaves their bikes with you. For the kids, as long as you are the legal parent or guardian, there is no paperwork other than signing the standard waiver at sign in. I dont think theyve ever had security issues there, but we always bring extra machines, and for peace of mind, I always carry some chains (worn out #520 bike chains) and padlocks, and lock them to the trailer. All in all, I think youll find their rules area lot lest restrictive than Silver Lake. I never ran into the alcohol issue at Silver Lake, but Ill bet they have an even shorter fuse about it! And they dont have camping on location.

Tim we contacted Badlands last year is search of more parks to ride and we were told by the office NO THREE WHEELERS ALLOWED! So we crossed them off the list. ?????????????????????????? I guess we were told wrong? thanks
PS. we should try to meet I'm in Macedonia Ohio about 40 min from your area and we have 100 acres in lisbon to ride on. No track but good for fooling around SEE YA ;) Torrey B.

Wow! I wonder how that happened. Mustve talked to somebody new or something. I am well familiar with the Lisbon area, as we ride in Wellsville a lot. We stay pretty busy throughout the summer, usually riding. We are going to Sunset Ramblers in Galion today and tomorrow, and next weekend Im going to run a 4 hour HS at Hidden Valley near Coshocton. The 29th we re riding in the Rittman parade, and the 31st we will probably go to Ralley in Herrick Valley in Adena.

Hey John Thats no problem. I only made reservations for us because I had no idea who would be coming or if they needed hookups and such. I told them others might be wishing to join us, and they said theyd have no trouble accomodating us.

So who's going for sure? Looks like me and my son will be rolling out friday morning, everyone else bailed. I'm not for sure yet that we are coming, I have to fix the boys quad this week then its a go, he tore it up pretty good yesturday. My trike isn't ready yet so I will be bringing the quad. Should I make reservations or will there be room when we get there? If anyone in Michigan wants to tag along I have room for one machine, we are heading down friday and coming back sunday.

Just got back about 1 1/2 hours ago ( 2:00 AM ). This trip was very interesting to say the least.

We got pulled over on the way to the Badlands. It was quite interesting ( more on this later ).

Then we did finally arive and just happen to catch TimSR & TimJr just leaving their camp ( very lucky ).

Then we ( my family ) almost didn't get to ride at all ( long story ). But some quick thinking and a lot of phone calls got us fixed up and riding.

I will write the long report later ( I am tired right now ). I will say this though: If you missed it you missed a SUPER time. We had a little of everything, chills, spills, thrills, hills, mud, and Cody even thought he was riding a submarine ( it was classic ). We had a few minor bumps and bruises ( my kids ). One machine died. It was a sudden death too. I might add it wasn't a Honda either.

We seen a few trikes there also. Every Trike I seen got a free 3WW sticker or 2. I am sure we will have a few more members soon. ;)

I will do up a full report later. Sleep is really needed right now.

Badlands Full Report.....
We headed off to the Badlands Friday morning right after I got off work and finished loading everything up. I had already been up since 12PM ( noon ) on Thursday. My theory here was: Badlands or bust, sleep is optional. lol

Our journey there was interesting. We were driving along doing the speed limit when out of no where a cop ( Deputy Sherrif ) comes up behind us like a bat out of ****. He followed us for 3-4 miles and then pulled us over. I had no clue why we was pulled over.
I had my DL and Reg ready when the deputy came up to the truck. I ask what I had did wrong and he told me he wanted to validate my ownership of all the ATV's we had with us. I told I did own them all, I told him I would have no problem with him checking the vin numbers. He explained that with the number of machines on the trailer I looked a little suspicious. I said "???". He explained that in that county they have had around 40 ATV's stolen in the past 3 months. I explained about the 2 I had stolen 3 years ago. We chatted for about 15-20 minutes. I must say I have never felt more impressed with any Police officer, as I was with this guy. I told him about 3WheelerWorld.com. I even gave him a stack of 3WheelerWorld stickers and information on how to contact me / us if he ever needs to. This Deputy was nothing short of a Class Act!! Yea, I could have been mad because I got pulled over while not doing anything wrong, but I'm not. I am happy knowing that there is at least 1 deputy out there that really cares about doing his job. It was nice knowing I was able to give him a little information to possibly help him and his department. Glenn Ashwell: Thank you for the eye opening experiance. ;)

Once we got rolling again it was smooth sailing until after we arrived. When we arrived we happened to catch TimSr & TimJr while they were taking a short break. We unloaded just enough to go ride and we were off to get our riding passes. We went to sign in and found out that my step son wasn't allowed to ride without a permission form from my wife ( his mom ). At this point I wasn't a happy camper. We have been to the badlands 3 times before and never had a problem. This time was different. They told me the only way he could ride was for me to get a hold of Karla and have her fax them the needed permission slip. After 30 minutes of thinking & calling with no luck we sent TimSr & Jr to go riding without us. After a total of a little over 1 hour and 20+ phone calls later ( and some thinking by me ) they got the needed permission slip. So we got Cody signed in.
We headed out to the trails and had some fun. After about 1-2 hours without finding TimSr & Jr we decided to check back at camp for them. There they were, Tim Sr was draining the gas out of the Tri-Z. I thought this isn't a good sign ( and I was right ). I will let him tell that one. ;)

TimSr got the Quad-Z out and fueled and away we went. We rode 3-4 hours until they closed for the day. Actually we got a extra 30-40 minutes because we thought they were open later. ooops!!!! lol

Back to the truck we headed and set up camp. We got everything ready and then ate and socialized. At around 11 - 11:30 PM I was done for. My 35+ hour no sleep marathon was over.

Saturday we got up and went out riding. We had a ball. Anthony and Cody found out they could make it up some big hills. They kept finding tougher and tougher hills. It was soo cool. A few people even noticed them tearing up the trails. One guy even video taped Anthony. TimSr and myself took a break and talked to these guys for quite a while. The kids were riding around having a ball ( they loved the area we were at ).

The kids had some mishaps while we were there. One of the funniest ones was Cody thinking the ATC70 was a submarine. He found out the the 70 don't run when the water is up to the seat. It died real quick, he figured out it was flooded!! lmao
Later Cody tried using his ATC70 as a Bulldozer. The tree won!! He fell off backwards and got up laughing. No human injuries, just a couple small cracks in plastic ( and a tree branch broken ).

Anthony kept pushing his 70 to his and it's limits ( Cody did the same ). A few times he over did it and rolled the machine. I am sure that if he would have been on any bigger machine he would have been hurt badly. All he got was 2 bruises the size of a dime and a small scrape ( I got worse with a razor ). lol His last spill was the worst one. He got up and got back on the 70. We got him out of the area we were in and headed towards another area. He wanted to take it slow. Not 10 minutes later he seen the one hill TimSr went up and away he went. I knew he wouldn't make it on his own. I raced up behind him and TimSr came in from the side also. a little push and he made it. This hill was one that if you stopped on the way up you were done for ( very loose sand ). TimSr and myself both stopped to help Anthony, both of us had to turn around and go down and then back up to the top.

All in all, I can't think of a better time at the Badlands. Perfect weather, the machines ran good with only minor problems with our machines ( With the exception of TimSr's Z ).

We socialized and ate for a few hours after the park closed for the day. We packed all our stuff up ( my crew's ) and headed home about 10:30PM ( Anthony was already sleeping ). We made it back in 3hrs 5 minutes. This morning I get up and the kids told me they can't wait until the next time. Those who didn't go missed a great time.
Maybe next time?

TimSr was staying the night and heading back this morning. I hope he has a safe trip!!
Note: He got some good video of us in action. I can't wait to see it!!

Howdy

P.S. If you go to the Badlands, look on the front door ( sign in shop ). They put one of our 3WheelerWolrd stickers up ( Top right corner of the glass ).

Hey Howdy, We got home Sunday night without incident. Now I just have to catch up on everything I put on hold. We always enjoy our Badlands ride. I was really impressed with how quiet the campground was, so Im sure we will stay there again next time. TimJr enjoyed having other kids to ride with. I havent had a chnace to review the tape yet, but Ill be sure to make you a copy. As always we look forward to going out again next year.

Sorry we missed you guys. We were there Tues. Wed. and Thurs. The riding was great the first two days because it had just rained and there was zero dust. It was getting pretty dusty on Thursday. We only saw two other ATC's--a 70 and a Big Red. I'm kinda surprised at your checkin difficulties. They never asked anything about my kids; just had everybody sign and me initial their signatures. It DOES say on their site though about step parents not being able to sign in kids without the actual parents permission. A little white lie would have gone a long way here!
