I was out riding my 86 200x in some trails that have a few mud pits, we are stopped and one of the guys asks me if my "dinosaur" will go thorugh it. I said I pretty sure it would, they laughed, put it in second gear and went off into it, I made it all the way, they were shocked. We were riding some more trails and there is a section that I know is muddy went through that no problem, one of the guys said that when he was in texas about 5 years ago, he was in a atv shop and they had "new" trikes on the showroom floor, he asked the salesman about them and the guy told him that they came from mexico, the business purchased a few and they sold fast so they bought the rest of the atc's that the warehouse had and these that are here are the last. The mudders were very impressed by my trike and they said that they were suprised about how well trikes with the right rider rode. I told them, if you think the 200x is good in mud, you should see how well a 250 bigred does, from what I have seen and one I rode they appear to be unstoppable in mud.

I'm pretty sure the companies have quite a few stashed away. These would probably sell like hotcakes, and bring a large price tag! I don't know what they are saving them for, but most likely just memoirabilia, or something. Just a part of the past's blast!

I've heard about new trikes to be found in dealers in mexico as late as 6-7 years ago, so could this be true?

a 250 big red IS unstoppable in the mud. i've had mine in mud pits so deep i had to stand on the seat (and i'm talking that the mud was RIGHT UP TO the seat), and it was nothing more than a playground for the big red.
