well ive owned my 250r (84) for almost a year now, i been trying to keep it in good shape, i use a gas mix of 32:1, change the engine about every 4 times i take it out(bout 5hrs of use) with 20 50w motor oil, runs good, it pulls hard
but i want to make it faster. lets say i have a $1000 buget. what can i do with that? and how much faster can it get?

when i bout it, it had a K&N filter the pipe says kerker on it but i has nothing inside, it just a hollow pipe( its really really loud) does this hurt the performance? i dont know if the carb is jeted, i want to upgrade as much as i can within my budget, i dont know much about working on these bikes but i sure as hell can learn.

is there anyway i can make it liquid cooled?

Welcome to the board ... Now first off, does it have a silencer/stinger/muffler at all or is that what says "Kerker" on it and it has the stock expansion chamber/pipe?.. If it dosent have a silencer on a pipe, get one immediately. But I'm assuming it does and you have a Kerker pipe - Sounds like you're off to a good start. If (and this is a big if) conditions allow (i.e. not alot of water or dust), you can up your horsepower quite a bit by either ditching the airbox completely and mounting a slip on airfilter or you can just remove the airbox lid or drill holes in the box. You would do this to increase the air flow to the engine. This is a two part equasion though - You would also need to upjet the main quite a few sizes in order to increase the available fuel to mix with the now greater volume of air or else you will blowtorch the piston. Replacing your stock reeds with a set of Boyesens power reeds will give you a pony and really improve your snap. Next you could take the jug to a good machinist who specializes in porting, and have some flow work done. I would recommend buying a Wiseco piston at the same time and have the machinist match up the ports. Wisecos piston port timing is more agressive than stock and they are good for a few more pony's - but only if you match up the port timing, otherwise, you gain nothing. The machinist could also deck the head for increased compression - but you will need to run race gas after that. Liquid cooling is not possible. There used to be a company called cool head that I think might have made a head for the A/C R's, but good luck finding one. Well, hope this helps.

Go out and buy yourself a manual made for your bike, that will help you understand most of the things we are talking about. I'm not understanding what you mean about the hollow exhaust. Is it the silencer at the end of the exhaust thats hollow? If so you need to repack it. This completely hollow silencer will rob you of some hp by not allowing any backpressure. What kind of conditions are you riding in? Dry dusty, wet and humid?

Go out and buy yourself a manual made for your bike

Thats usually my first (and the best) advice to anyone .... I seem to be slacking lately.

i mostly ride trails by the local river bottom, so i go through water, mud, sand and dust all the time, when the rainy season comes, ALL mud water :)

i notieced that its starting to leak oil from the head gasket, what can be the problem,?
when i got the bike it had these 3 or 4 inch spacers on the back side of the wheels to make them stick out, what are the pros and cons for using those wheel spacers?

hey wickedfinger how much em i looking to spend for what you said above?

thanks guys for all the input

I dont think you could make a air cooled R faster then a raptor inless you bought a big bore kit for it but I think you would be better off buying a liquid cooled R(85-86)to mod out if you want to be faster then a raptor...

Why not buy a liquid R?

Don't give up on a good trike, buy a liquid cooled 250 R or a nice Tecate. With some porting and a pipe you'll be killing Raptors.

what i have heard is step to an 86r carb and reeds with reed cage gives more performance. if you have anything leaking by your head gasket that means you need to replace it. while you got the head off check cylinder clearances and condition of cylinder walls. definatly get you a new silencer. dg is the only thing i have found for my 83

thanks for the tip barry, ill start looking for those parts, i just recently bought a DG muffler, i did a compression test and it read 190 psi, but im still going to put in a new gasket
