The 400ex was smokin ( and very badly ).
Hmm, maybe the guy was trying to do some burn outs? LMFAO, ( sorry about the pun, I just couldn't resist. )
Actually I just thought you might want to see the Newest machine we have ever bought. It's a 2002 Black 400ex. We don't know the whole story of what happened to it. But you can see it wasn't pretty. If you asking if we actually bought this machine? the answer is Yes, We paid quite a bit of money for it. This is proof we buy anything.
FYI, We do not regret buying it. We knew what we were buying when we bought it. Believe it or not there was a lot of good parts on it, and some bad ones also.

I would seriously like to know what good parts are or were on it. To me it doesn't look like anything is useable.

You would really be suprized!! I took my power washer and cleaned it up as best I could.
The motor did turn over and still had good compression. In fact when we hooked jumper cables to the electric start it turned the motor over like it should. I removed the starter and took it apart and inspected it. It looked like a new one inside. Also, we couldn't find any internal fire / heat damage to the motor. The only problem we seen was a light surface rust in the cylinder from it sitting outside for a couple months.
Did you see the before picture of the gas cap? Here it is after my boy got a hold of it and our power wire brush. FYI, It only took him 10 minutes to do this:

This only goes to show that you can clean up BLACK parts. lol

I just missed out on getting a bike in that same shape for free, it was a yfz 450. It had about 10 hours on it and when I went to pick it up I found out the guys dad took it to the scrap yard two days earlyer. It had been in a pole barn fire but I figured there would be alot of good motor parts at least to salvage, oh well, you snooze you loose.

I'm 99% sure this wasn't stolen. The guy I got it off of mentioned a garage fire. The frame was checked for warpage / bends. But everything checked as it should be.

I'm not one that says what I pay for most machines. I will say this though, We did trade a bunch of parts when I bought this. He had a pile he wanted to get rid off, and he needed some parts from the 400ex and few others we had.
As far as the cash we had to pay ( on top of the parts dealing ) goes, we have bought a running ( rideable ) 350x for less than we paid for this 400ex ( not counting the other parts ). In fact we have actually bought quite a few running machines cheaper.
Wasn't it Risky? Heck yea! We actually bought it as a joke. But we did have enough good parts to get our money back ( & a little extra ).
I would buy another one of these like this if we could find one.

I'd be weary of the motor, theres a good chance if it was sitting on fire for even a short time the internal seals could have melted. So from what I see you have an almost complete 400EX to part out. The skid and swinger would be 350X parts and rebuild the rear shock, also axle hubs and carrier...lots of usable parts that can be cleaned up to look like the gas cap. As for a twisted frame, nah just looks like the swinger bearings are shot.

... My guess is that "Bed roll" or whatever the heck that thing is thats strapped to the front of that wreck blocked enough airflow to the motor to cause it to "spontianiously combust" ..... oh, no wait, the giant, oversized, monster boxcar airscoops on it would have prevented that ... sorry, no clue.

How much did you get from the Ebay auctions? I almost bought the frame since it is easier to ship to my location than a 250r.
