does anyone know waht honing is..im not sure about sp..my cylinder for one of my projects is all rusted and i want to clean it up

Honing is a process that is done after you have overbored a cylinder or determined that the taper of the cylinder is within spec and no over bore is required, but you would like to freshen up the cylinder. Honing is much like sanding a piece of wood. In both cases you use an abrasive, start course and finish with fine. You can hone a cylinder head with a machine or a hand drill. While its a fairly easy procedure, you might wanna leave this up to a machinist. It shouldn't cost you much at all to take it to a machinist to have it done. The hard part of the process is leaving a cross hatch pattern that will work in sync with the rings, on the piston, to have minimal blowby and maximum compression. Be a good idea to contact the ring manufacturer about that or be sure the machinist has an idea of what their doing, as rings require different patterns. Good luck

Think of honing as just using a tool designed to sand the cylinder. It is good for light scratch removal, surface rust, and prep for new rings when the specs are still within range so a bore is not needed. Measure the cylinder and as long and the rust is surface and you don't have digs, honing may be good enough for your needs

it also puts a cross hatch pattern to let oil move in the cylender.

I have light scoring on the surface of my sleeve. Will honing do the trick? I got a piston thats 1 over (.020 oversize). I've never done this type of engine work before, but i've done a bit of research so I think it'll work.

Its possible, take it to a trusted machinist and see what he/she says. I would also let them do the honing but thats up to you.

Funny this thread came up. I just got a bone stock jug from a 250r air cooled. I swear they never rode it or something. It has very light rust inside it.
As luck would have it, I won a stock 70mm Weisco from ebay for a song. It drops in and fits PERFECT. Slides up and down real nice. Bore is very round.
Can I just use one of them things on the drill with the balls, or is the cross hatch pattern real important?
I was thinking the rings would clean up the cylender about five seconds after I start it anyway..?

This one only needs to last until I can find a CR500 motor anyway. :) LOL
