so i pulled the handle off of my 85 110. i took it off, pulled some more rope out and put a new handle on that i had laying around. now it doesn't recoil all the way, only partial, i get to pull'n and then pulls all the way out and doesn't recoil at all and i have to take it off and wind it by hand. is the rebuild kit on ebay worth the $25 bux or should i just buy a used pull start? the kit comes with a spring, rope and handle. is my spring just spent or what? :TrikesOwn

never had a 110 apart but ive rebuilt many b&s starters in the small engines shop, sounds like your spring may not be hooked in the middle, should just slide into a slot and sort of lock in, if the end that locks in broke off just hit it with the grinder and make a little notch in it, also make sure that the spring is wound up before you put the rope in

Whatever you do, DON'T let the big spring come out of the case. I think you have to wind the spring and rope in some sort of sequence to get it right. I sure wish I had your problem instead of mine and yours.
Does anyone have a picture of the inside together, with the little funny w springs and the two copper bushings in the right places.

He is right, do your best to keep the spring inside. If it pops out then you are in for a world of grief getting it back in. Some people have the touch when winding them back up, but I can tell you that I lack that touch.

ok i fixed it, piece of cake ...kinda. yea u have to take the rope completely out, then the center cap and 3 fingers with 2 washers and spring. than u have to wind up the center piece alot and get good tension on it and THEN feed the rope into it and then when u release the center piece it winds all back up. then u put the fingers back in their place, one copper washer over the shaft followed by the spring, then the cover piece, than the other copper washer and then the e-clip. :Bounce
