View Full Version : Honda 185s tune up help needed
Hi, I need to check the ignition timing on my trike. Im not sure how. I see where you advance or retard it behind the CDI cover, but I dont know where its suppose to be set. Could someone give me directions... Also, How do you check to see if there is too much slack on the timing chain? Is it adjustable to get the excessive slack out? Im just trying to get one of my 3 wheelers to run perfect and I have no manual. Thanks

yea the timing chain is adjustable...the little black thing on the case..take it off and theres a bolt..2 actually..loosen the one on top a bit and it was force the chain tensioner to tightin...then u should be ok...and as for the ignition...unless someones messed with it it should be fine..if its running bad it could be the timeing ..usually not the ignition tho...u dont really set the cdi...unless its not getting a spark..take off the rotor and turn it 180 degrees and then see..if it aint that then i dunno
Thanks for the help with the timing chain. As far as the ignition timing, The guy I got the 3 wheeler from bought it not running. He tinkered with it and got it to idle roughly, but it would rev up... Just die. So, he put a new coil on it, didnt help. took apart the carb and cleaned, didnt help. And then he started to mess with the stuff under the CDI cover. He said he adjusted the timing under then, but he didnt know what he was doing. Anyhow, I got the bike from him, and all that was wrong is the air cleaner was clogged up. It runs good, but i want to make sure that the timing is right on, and im getting the most power out of the trike. Thanks

very simple, take the cdi cover off. take that little plug right next to the pull starter out and look inside. take out the spark plug to make it easier to crank it. when the 'F' mark lines up with the middle of that hole the center of the cdi rotor should be lined up with the center of the pickup coil. thats it.

i usually take off my pull starter to make it alot easier and get it precise on the dot...the cylmer says to aline the t mark with the engine at top dead center and line up the cam gear wit hthe bubble straight up and then put the chain on then put the gear in place and bolt it on the cam then put it all together and take off..lol

alrighty...chat services make stuff alot easier because theres no delay and u dont take up room on these forums and get accused of hogging them and being inconsiderate
Did you all decide if it was the "t" or "f" i was suppose to align by the pullstarter? Thanks

well if u take off the pullstarter aliign it with t because u have it exactly in time but it u dont then align it with f because if u feel it move after u get to the t mark it goes to the f right under top dead center wich is still exactly in time still..so either way its ok...t if u take off the starter..f if u dont
