View Full Version : My newly renovated T3! Heart Surgery!

As most of you know the stator on my Tecate went out a while back and I was looking for a new one. My engine also needed new center cases because the old ones were cracked and leaked oil.
I then bought a 95 KX 250 engine for a quad I was planning on building. After a while I couldnt take it any more so last night and tonight I worked on putting the kx engine in the T3. I had to modify the old front and bottom motor mounts on the frame for the engine to work. The rear mount of the kx engine was skinner than the KXTs mount so I had to make a few spacers. I still havent figured out a headstay for it yet. I used the stock kx ignition system, but custom brackets had to be made for the coil and cdi box.
I had my dad help me out a bit, and we modified a 98 kx 250 pro circuit pipe I had to work. This thing sounds mean! Still havent gotten to take it for a spin but Im planning on it right away in the morning. I also have carbon fiber reeds in the kx engine. Talk about some really sharp throttle response even with the stock 34mm tecate carb. Im planning on getting a 38 or 40 mm flatslide asap. The trike may not look the best now, but once I get done with it, it should look great! After I take it for a spin in the morning Ill give you guys my opinion on this conversion. :D
Ill have more pics soon!

I am drooling...
...I have wanted to do that for my Tri Z for quite sometime now.
the Tri Z is probably more complex as far as the transplant.
Here is what folks said about the 95 KX 250 motor:
"This bike was the Fastest 250 l have owned. l out run a 99yz,99rm,99kx,00,& 97cr, in drag races on sevral passes each. People did think you were on a 500. Easy bike to start too. All my bike had on it was FMF gnary with a PC silincer, and carbon reeds."
"I had a flywheel weight, RAD valve, FMF Fatty pipe and silencer on, and it was awesome. It would leave a 1999 Yz250 for dead! People thought it was a 500.It had great bottom, very good mid, and killer top."

Have fun....that transplant is the way to go...!!!

If you re read my paragraph it says that I have to fabricate a headstay. I believe Kawasaki moved the mount to the front for several years. Then they switched it back. Thanks for the info Darius. Good luck with you and your Z project. I say go for it.

Welp guys just took it for a spin. Can you say Scary Fast! This thing is freaky, I definitly need to get a longer swingarm! It will lift the front end with ease in 5th gear. Even on our track powerslides are about impossible, because as you start to get sideways and get more into the throttle the front ends in the air. I love it, its a rush. Its definitly faster than any of the new 450s Ive ridden, and banshees. Right now its best in straight line drags because of the front end lifting so easy. If you can keep the front end down while accelerating, this thing hauls. Darius I really think you should put a yz engine in your Z, you will be amazed!
Im also running 14/37 gearing w/ 20 inch tires. If I calculated right, its still higher geared than the stock kx and t3.

Hmm...blue Duros. Where did you find them?
You need to clean the bike up and find a number plate, motor looks great and if the performance is really what you say then thats wild. Good job.

thankfully YZ's have never been a fast as the Kx 250....
that bike sounds like a monster.
Another advantage is that if you want to go big bore on it...there are kits that will take it up to 330....
...I know....it would be crazy to do that..since its so fast already.
I love 80's trikes but don't care for the out dated engines....

Of course its alot faster. I think we tend to underestimate the increased power of modern (i.e., mid 90's and newer) two stroke 250 power plants.
KX 250's have always had incredible motors.

If KX's have been the baddest, where are all the titles?

Howdy had that pair laying up in his attic and I bought them a couple monthes before trikefest. Went riding some more today, this thing is a monster hill climber if you can keep the front end planted.

KX's have had the biggest bottom end hit and strong mid range. Just because a bike is fast or has a big hit that does not mean it will win supercross races.
If that were the case we would have never lost the 500cc classes. Supercross killed the 500 cc class.
Still the KX was the horsepower king in the mid to late 90's. The CR is close but makes more power from mid to top...generally.

I have to get a set of these tires, only one person had them around here and it was on a Banshee over ten years ago.
Can you get blue Duro's in the 18 inch size with a 10 inch wheel like the Hoosiers? I would like to get a set to complete the green/blue look on my 85 Tecate and they are the same as the Hoosiers I want. Somebody please PM me the place I can buy them new and I will keep the secret goin.
Thanks, James.

is that the pic or are those tires BLUE, whomade those and for what originally, weird.

They are infact Blue, they are basicly the same design as the HOOSIER MX tires that Jimmy White used to run on his Tecate, except they are blue.

I would get those tires off the bike. I think that those would be worth big money. They are cool though.

Nice work on the conversion, was the exhaust pipe hard to make fit? how close in size is the new engine to the old one. Did you use the old radiators?
I've got an 87 T3 and the ignition system is on the way out, Its going to cost me $300 to get it back on line. Also the engine sometimes makes the worst high pitched grinding sounds at high RPM. I was considering an engine change.
One engine I had in mind was the new KXF250 fourstroke motor. How hard was your swap? would you recommend it?

you can buy coil packs for your stator from rickystator for only $40. if your flywheel is still good, thats all you need. and sometimes on ebay rickystator sells thier flywheel/stator combo and it always goes for less than they sell it on their website.. if you want a 4 stroke trike, i'd recomend just selling me your T3 and buying a 350x  . no, but seriously, i dont think you could find a 4 stroke motor that would fit in a T3 frame that would have anywhere near the performance that you are used to. just my opinion though, do some resaerch and let us know what you find.

I wouldnt put a 4 stroke motor in the T3 just because Im a major 2 stroke fan now. The swap was perty easy, The only thing that needed mods was the front motor mounts and spacers for the rear mount, you also need a new radiator hose for the head coolent port. There is a really souped up 91 KX engine on ebay now, I would highly recommend the swap. The pipe wasnt to hard. Just need to have basic welding skills. Im putting a yz 250 engine in a blaster here soon, Ive allready got the frame, and a swinger. Itll be my MX quad since I want to start racing soon. Should be perty awesome, since Im getting extended a arms and better shocks.

haha amc you schemer, i know too, LOL, and also, what they are is a copy of hoosiers "tri-trac" tires (which are still readily available by the way), the blue ones are too, at a good price.

I knew they were a copy but I'd like to have the blue Duros instead of the Hoosiers. Are they available online to buy?
