Do you mean the spring in the recoil or just the rope?I have it written down somwhere here usally i end making my spring pop out of the recoil cause i wind the rope the wrong way, from now on to avoid that mess i'm just gonna pay the honda dealer a few bux to change the rope for me..I'll look around for the note i down on the rope i think it's counter clockwise but i'll double check for sure.

Don't go to honda to change your cable.. it's a piece of cake..

i've done this a few times already....

when you remove the cable houseing, there is a notch on the pulley, you pull the cord from the inside.. rotate the pulley with the cable in the notch to wind it up..

i'll try to find the link to a graphic explanation on the other 3 wheeler site.

Don't be afraid to take it apart.Once you see the parts you should be able to figure it out.Its pretty simple.Lay it down flat and pull the pulley straight up and you may get by w/o taking the spring out.

Just wind it back up in your hand , make it a smaller diameter than the case and lay it in and let go .Easy as that.

hey rob..make shure your winding the spring so its caught on the right side of the prong thingy..on the end of the cabel...then you can curv it around in circles..it will go in but you have to put constat presure on the spring untill you get it in all the way :)

i'm not even gonna bother from now on i'll pay a couple bux and it'll be done quick and i won't screw things up...i might see if i can buy a skinny clothesline wire to put in so i never have to worry about broken cords..

Good Idea. I put a steel cable in one of mine about 8 years ago.I'm not sure if its the diameter of the rope or something else special with it,but if you don't buy the honda rope, they never last.

I tried this, real pain in the ass. DO NOT use metal pull ropes! The cord doesn't wind up correctly, it frays, it stabs you in the hand, and everytime you pull it, it eats away at the housing.I would rather change broken ropes than deal with that again.

i don't think you can wind them the wrong direction beings the tab on the pulley is set up the way it is. once you get the spring back in the casing it is a piece of cake. make sure you put the clips on before you start to wind the spring. don't put tension on the spring till you have the rope fed through and tied on both ends. once you get that part done you can pull the rope up from between the pulley and the inside of the casing. there is a notch that you set the rope in to wind the spring. give it a couple of turns and let the rope draw in to the pulley. if there is not enough tension to pull all the rope in then pull the rope up in the notch and wind some more. if you get no tension then the spring is bent to far out in the center where it sits to catch the pulley.bend the spring a little to make sure it catch the tab. if you break the bent part of the spring you will have to heat the spring to get it to bend or it will break.
i hope that this has helped you, i know the spring can be a real pain but when you get it down you will have the satisfaction of having beat it. i don't like to pay anyone for something that i can do myself

ok I installed rope by removing the pawls and the spring loaded cover. I wound pulley up then fed rope through inside. Is there a certain number of time to wind pulley or just wind it until it stops?

just wind it till its good n tight or stops...the more you wind it the quicker it will re-coil :)

one time when i was changing the rope in one of my rewinds thespring jmped out at me slicing my neck open luckily my father was there to bring me to the emergency room, i am joking, but realy this one time i was taking apart a rewind and the spring did ump ot but after 3 hours of cursing yelling and a bunch of small cuts on my fingers i got the spring back in the case, what i did is i i pounded 2 nails in the wall, and put the middle of the spring on the nails and wound the spring ,once i had it wound a little i put some ties on it to hold it then wound it some more then put some more ties on it once it was wound very small, i put it in the case and then i cut the ties with a nipper and pulled the ties out with a needle nose pliers, vwalla the spring was in the case.
