Sounds like the solenoid. Short the two nuts together on the solenoid with a screwdriver and see if it starts then. If it starts the solenoid is the problem. If not try new brushes in the starter. I assume you checked for a loose ground?????? or poor conections. It doesn`t take much for it not to work.

i dont mean to insult you, but are you sure you got the battery connected right? (postive to positive, negative to negative), i know on a lawnmower i had both wires were the same color with no signs of which was which, so it was a guess and test kinda deal, and when it was hooked up wrong it would only click, i'm not very smart on electric starts, but i figured i'd throw my only suggestion in.

is the battery fully charged, and are the wire connectors tight

or take the starter off and hook direct up to a battery or charger and see if it spins. if it don't ,,, well i'd say it's the starter.

if it helps at all, my work van did that the other day, turned out it was a bad ground on the starter. i'd check connections and then test the starter itself like someone mentioned, if the starter spins and is good it's probably the solenoid.

That happened to me on my old 250ex..same problem, the starter was cooked. I had to tap on it somtimes to get it to work, before it finally the bed.

Don`t be afraid of it. Cross the two nuts out FIRMLY. that way it will make a solid contact. You are obviously getting lots of power to the solenoid but the question is, is it going through?? Like I stated previously If the engine turns over with a solid contact the problem is the solenoid.

check your connections.........clean em.
your battery sounds fine and starter works ( seeing as it jumped when you crosswired it)
So i would check your terminal connections *battery* clean the connections.
also check your ground wires and make sure that they are good, sometimes paint accounts for the problem. ;)
