I have an 85 KLT 160, and it has this thing about not wanting to spark. There was a wire on the coil that was junk before, but I fixed that and wired it back together, and it started sparking realy strong just like it should, but then I threw the tank and plasics on the bike and it wouldn't start so I checked the fire and it was firing about once every few pulls. I checked every connection,I am not 100% sure that this is the right coil for this bike. There is a little pulse coil inside the motor that sits right outside the flywheel,I was wondering if that is supposed to break the fire up any? Or does the CDI break the fire? I am thinkin it is the CDI causing this but I am not for sure.Any and all help would be apreciated. Also when I hooked an OHM meter to the wires going to the pulse coil on the KLT and pulled the motor over it changed the reading every so often about the same time the bike usually fires. I did the same thing on my XR500, and the reading didn't change at all.

Ok, there are a few things we can do so here goes, just ensure that your timing marks are aligned. We don't want to damage the engine. :bounce

1. Go back to the coil wire you replaced and make sure the connection is good. Measure the resistance of the coil - Primary (blade post to mounting lug) 0.18-0.28 ohms, Secondary (plug cap to mounting lug) 3.2-4.8 Kohms.

2. Verify that you have the correct spark plug (NGK D8EA) and that the gap is set to 0.6-0.7mm.

3. Verify that you have the correct CDI. The KAWASAKI PN: 21119-1114, it is a NipponDenso (ND) PN: 070000-1130.

4. Measure the resistance of the CDI unit. Email me and I will send you the measurements. :D

5. Measure the pick-up coil resistance between the BK and BK/Y wires (90-160 ohms).

If you find any problems with the above items correct them and retry. :-D
If you don't find any problems with the above list, email me and I will guide you through a few more steps. :D

I will verify any numbers on my coil tomorrow and post them. The correct coil is KAWASAKI PN: 21121-1121
