here's the story...a long story made longer...I just bought this 1984 honda 200M 3 wheeler.it ran fine but it smoked like crazy.I knew it needed rings when I bought it.so...I bought the rings and gaskets, pulled the motor out, installed the new rings and gaskets, and put the motor back in.I hooked everything up and tried to fire it up.well it wouldn't start.so I thought the timing was off.checked the timing and it was correct.
I then did a spark test. here's the kicker...when I put the spark plug in the cap,and hold it to bare metal,it will not spark...if I lift the spark plug off of the metal about an 1/8th or 1/4 of an inch away from the metal it will spark bright blue. someone told me the motor wasn't grounded.I figured it worked before why not now? all I did was pull the motor out, replaced the rings and gaskets and set it back in...how could it change?
the other day I pulled the spark plug cap off and just set the cap on top of the spark plug.I hit the started button and it fired right up.it ran real good no smoke (new rings) or popping or backfiring.then I shut it off.I turned on the key and hit the button again,it fired right up.it started everytime that day on the first try,but if I put the cap back on the plug it would die.the next morning I went out to fire it up.nothing...it seemed like I was back to square one again.I called honda, they said the spark plug cap was bad,I went and got a new one,it didn't help.
If I put the spark plug in the spark plug hole, and put the cap on it,it will not fire.If I pull the spark plug cap off of the spark plug and let it just sit on top of the spark plug without pushing it down on the plug it will fire.
also, the ground cable from the battery is grounded to the frame and motor.
somewhere it is grounding itself out and I can't find it or figure out why.could any electrical components have gone bad just sitting there? any fuses I need to check?
what I don't get is,everything worked before I took it apart to put new rings in it.I didn't change anything except new rings.
anyone have this problem before? did you get it solved? what was it? any help would be greatly appreciated.
if I can't figure it out this week,I'll most likely take it to the shop (I hate to at $70 an hour labor),if they can't figure it out, then check back here in the classifieds cause it will be up for sale as parts or the whole bike. it does run and shifts fine because I rode it,it just smoked.now that I have the new rings in it,it doesn't smoke, but it doesn't start now either.you can email me at tats@htc.net or post here. thanks!
