View Full Version : Stupid Questions/Stupid People
Mr. Sandman

More and more I find myself reading posts and either laughing out loud at the stupid questions ie: What's the gap on a spark plug? or the overall stupidity of people and their actions ie: Trying to run from the cops, etc. I am inclined to reply, but it's really just a waste of time.
However, maybe it's time for a general reply to stupid technical questions, such as "Buy a Manual" and for the stupid people incidents, "Stupidity at it's Best".
Anyone on board with this, agree/disagree or want to trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro about the idea in general?

There is no such thing as a stupid question (as long as they honostly dont know, and mechanical related)
as for all the general stupidity, Why do you think people are starting to fade from these boards? I know I spend alot more time on other ones now then this one. It's on a downhill slide, getting more and more overrun by hmm.. (cant use personal attacks) uh. "those who make stupid / pointless post" . Kinda like bluetraxx etc..
Although every time anyone says anything about this they get chewed out and the post gets deleted (trust me.. I've been there).
I say the mods do things Nazi style for awhile, put postwhores on week bans if they dont stop, Let people pay you (mods) to put people on ban for a week (got that from another site), That'd even be a good way to make money for the site, hah.
I'm betting this is gone within an hour.

I usually just read the post(s) & then  , taking comfort in the fact that society has it's way of weeding out the truly stupid ones. A good example of the "weeding out" process is the Darwin award, which has quite a few recipients each year.

I accept the mechanical questions, but when I see someone talk about the glory of getting caught drunk, and then a week later talk about how people disrespect atv riders and deny them access to private land it starts to agrivate me.

Amen! I don't like or want to add to the rules, but post such as "I ran from the cops", "I was out drinking and riding", and such post to me have no place on the forums. Postings such as these do not help the sport at all. To me if your so dam proud of running from the cops, or if your so proud that you got caught riding while drinking, or other such activities, then take out a ad in your local paper and tell everyone there. This even goes for if you own a known "Stolen item". When you post crap like this here on the forums you only make yourself look bad / imature ( sp? ). I say Grow up!!
Another option is to send copies of such postings to the respective police departments so they know who to be watching. I am sure they would welcome the help in combatting crime. hehe

I've made some dumb posts and started a few dumb threads I'm sure. I think what agrivates most users is questions that have already been answered or ones that everyone thats been on the board as long as most of us has already knows the answer to. If most users searched (which is damn simple thanks to the quick search feature) then there wouldn't be half the dumb posts there are today. I too have noticed that most of the senior members have stopped coming here as often to post or even to visit and that really sucks cause their knowledge is what makes this board so great. So to you newbies and post whores please keep our board clean and on topic cause this is one of my favourite sites and is a place I'll be posting for a long time to come.

You know I think about this pretty often. And on one hand, the way to regulate this is to totally chew out anyones *** that makes a mistake or asks something that has been asked before in the past (aka www.pirate4x4.com ) Or, just tell the person the answer and then explain to them that this gets asked often and move one. I think maybe the soloution here is to give a break to the newer members until they've got use to things. However if you've been here a while and know how things work and do something stupid you should be notified of it in such a way that you wont do it again...I dont know exaclty how to regulate it, but I feel what you guys are saying.

I feel the pain for sure. I left for over a year and when I came back I didn't know to many people here and I thought the seniors were gone. I was wrong, it's just that it gets tiring answering those how many quarts questions so a lot of the guys don't post much anymore. They're here and watching, but rarely post and i don't blame them. When I came back I was excited again and was in on every topic. It didn't take long for me to cut back. I think the best solution is to add when you feel it's interesting or if you feel you want to get involved. The new members take care of themselves fine most of the time. It seems natural for senior members to pull back and newbies to write on and on. There's nothing wrong with that and I think if we tried to regulate it we would loose a lot of potentialy good new memebers. So although it gets old seeing the show your ________ threads, it's just the way you keep new members comming in. I think to be honest, a lot of us started out asking some kind of anoying question.

I dont have much of a problem with "stupid questions". They are based on a desire to learn something. I have a much bigger problem with STUPID ANSWERS that are based on a desire to make people believe somebody is knowledgeable, when they are not. I too have busted out laughing while reading some of the "expert advice" laid out by post whores who think they are enhancing their reputation as an expert, when in fact they are seen as post whoring morons who damage the efforts of people trying to get good information.
Dammit!

Maybe you should make a Post Whore category and start labeling people you deem worthy of it. So instead of "registered user" under their name, you get the idea.
I'm a newbie and love this place. Sorry if any of my questions have been in the stupid category. I have been posting a hell of a lot because... well because I have no life. :p
Without the newbies, internet forums tend to wither and die so be careful what you wish for.

Tim, this is one of the first times I 100% agree with you, Let me explain what has happened to me alot lately..
I read a post by someone asking for help on a problem,, I know what most likely could be the problem, so I start typing up a response, I get done and hit reply. I go back to the topic to read my response and make sure everything is said correctly, and in that little time i was typing 5 people have replied before me with stuff like
"i dont know , maybe its the ____ but i really dont know, maybe someone on here knows,, HEHE this really wasnt helpfull but i hope you get it fixed :TrikesOwn "
Maybe its just me, but if you really don't know, WHY are you even replying at all?!?!
I know alot of the people I talk to from here barely post anymore, because they don't feel like weeding through all the BS just to get to the good information. I know there's been many a time where I see a post and decide to help, and when I click on it I find 2 pages of nothing but BS so I don't even bother replying, all the useless stuff gets pure ANNOYING after awhile.
What's real amusing is when someone is asking for help on say a 250R, and people will reply telling them to check the valves...

I must admit im also sick to death of these ******* stupid posts by postwhores. Im not scared to mention any names of the postwhores on this forum. I have also noticed a lack of people on here nowadays that actually have some knowledge. People like, Howdy, HondaATC, Timsr, Trikaholic, Triz-Jim. I will admit i was a stupid newbie for a little while but i dont think i have ever been a useless postwhore. There are some absolutely some stupid replies that are just downright USELESS. Ones like Jared mentioned, and the ones where someone posts a pic of their trike. They reply and say, "cool :TrikesOwn " or "nice trike" or "sweet". Sure these comments are nice for the thread owner, but are they really necessary? Im so ticked off right now im going to list some names of "postwhores"...

Another thing, why do you have to swear? Does it make you feel like a big man? Because in all fact your not. Your carrying on like a 2 year old kid, whos had his lollypop stolen .
Maybe i finally bought you to the realization that your just a damn postwhore who cant even spell words properly. How old were you when you finished your education? For example, "buissness", is actually spelt Business. And thats not the only thing you cant spell

That's fine but I hate it when someone post a pic and then gets pissed when you say something negative. If you post a pic don't be a puss bag about it, just take it and shut up. It seems like you could post a pile of dogshit and people will say "nice trike". That's just stupid and I'm tired of the new world order where everyone must be patted on the back for nothing.

WOW guys ease up. I always thought cold brought metabolism down. I think you all are missing the point. First of all the cop thing. Well here is a pup who insulted alot of members by posting that interesting story. Now it is still there, why so that many folks can insult him. Hmm tell me the difference please? You guys have ahuge board, and along with that, a younger generation. They love this board. They have fun. THEY LEARN. And not just basic mechanics, but how to ineract with others. Stupid questions, comments, and answers yes are annoying, but you all need to remember that you are here to help. Yes some will need to be slapped down a bit, but dont be abusive about it. There are some fabulous leaders on this board. Lead them. Teach them. Remember there are many bandwagons, which do you want everyone on? At the rate this one is going, alot of folks will start getting to scared to post at all. You covered (or griped), about pretty much every post on the first page of trikesylvania. Im annoyed with the pict comments, im annoyed with the mechanical answers, im annoyed with joey saying good luck, and BLAH BLAH.
I agree with most all of what's been said about responses. I have asked some pretty stupid questions, I must admit, especially when I first hit the board, but have since learned to do a search first. A lot of times the search will bring some information up but doesn't QUITE answer your question. I find that the majority of the "old timers" here are happy to answer the questions, sometimes doing nothing more than linking another thread so they don't have to go through the whole speech again. That's fine with me and I always try and thank the guys (or gals) for their help. That is the polite thing to do. The only thing that fries me is when someone posts a question and the first two or three replies are "What would you ever want to do that for" or something like that. It's only happened to me once, but I see that kind of thing a lot with others. Maybe saying it like; "If it were me, I wouldn't do that for this reason..., but if you really want to, here is how it would be done". Don't make people feel stupid.
I know little or nothing about the trikes we discuss here, so I try and limit my technical replies to ones that I have either experienced directly or have some real basis of knowledge of. Leave the comments to the folks who know what they're doing.
As far as the spelling and what I call "IM speak", it drives me nuts too, but it seems to be the same on most every board. Unfortunately the internet and it's bells & whistles are ruining the English language and there is nothing that can be done about it, I'm afraid.

I'm a new guy to this forum,so maybe I don't understand some of the gripes here.Maybe after the new wears off, I too will be irritated,I hope not though. I watch this forum several times a day,and enjoy reading most of the posts.Even the dumb ones are better than nothing when you've read most everything. I read this forum to hear, talk and learn about three wheelers. I consider everyone here friends.I don't get it when I read comments like "lets humiliate some more members".Thats B.S! If you stick your neck out with a stupid comment like the cops thread (sorry Tim),you should get flamed a little, but not just because you post more than you should.Like I said,I'm a new guy,but thats my opinion.

I hope you don't get irritated either. As I was saying on page 1 of this thread, I think the stupid and repetitive questions make people cut back on replies more than anything. The truth is, without those stupid a repetitive questions, we would loose a lot of new members. It may be annoying to us at times but we need it for growth. This whole thread really should be a vent more than anything. The most important thing we need to understand is who we are and what we want our roles to be. If you don’t want to get involved in the simple how to’s then don’t. The newbies will take care of the newbies. I say just let nature take it's course and if you want to bust a couple of balls along the way have fun.

I sure am learning alot about 3 wheelers on this thread. lol.
This site is just like life. You have annoying people, idiots, ones that never shut up, smart people, you get my point.... its reality guys. inexpierianced people always have big mouths and you veterans seem to be more layed back. this thread is a good idea for people to read just so they become aware of the excessive posting issue otherwise this thread has no point and isnt necessary. i always thought 3 wheeler world was like a family on here, everyone always welcomes the newbies when they first join and then they get badmouthed a week later. things always change and get overpopulated (like my home town, pratically no more fields, its all housing) and usually change in society sux(not for the better), so just deal with it already.
i have to agree with tim. i have seen many wrong answers then when you try to correct them with the correct way they want to get pissed off and argue with you. to me the only dumb question is one that is unasked. so anyway who would be the one to determine when a dumb question is asked probably the one who always give dumb answers.

I think the reason some get upset is that they found someone smarter than they are. Let them get mad, I don't care. Why don't I care? Because New and old users want correct information, not wrong answers that could cost them dearly. I say if you can correct someone then do it! This goes for me also. ;)

What is a Blue Moon?
There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). July 2004 will have two full moons: the first on July 2, the second on July 31—that second full moon is called the blue moon.
The Other Kind of Blue Moon
An older definition for the blue moon is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac. According to this definition, the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Why would one want to identify the third full moon in a season of four full moons? The answer is complex, and has to do with the Christian ecclesiastical calendar. I won't go into that one. lol
Edit: I forgot to add that the next Full moon will occur May 31, 2007. ;)

Agreed on that. I personally like those threads. Yeah, there is a readers rides page but, you don't get to interact with the owners of the trikes and discuss them and what not. I don't see how there's anything at all wrong with those threads. It's all about enthusiasm for your trikes (and other people's trikes). Just my 2 cents on the subject.
Suggestion for forum: This forum and it's little community would benefit greatly from a sticky FAQ thread. Most other forums on specific subjects have these. Just a simple thread that can either have a Q&A format covering some of the questions that get asked over and over again or links to previous informative threads on particular subjects. Maybe a mixture of both. I'm actually surprised such a thread hasn't been made yet. They're extremely useful to the new people and they can help relieve the vets of the same Q's getting asked all the time. At the very least they can just link to the FAQ thread when those questions get asked.
It's important that the FAQ thread not be an open thread so it doesn't get cluttered up to a hundred pages over time. The best way I've seen it done is, people respond to the thread with links that they think should be considered for the FAQ, mods look at it and then delete the response after deciding whether or not it should be added.
If one of the mods wants to take the idea and run with it, I nominate the following thread to be added under carb/jetting help. Lots of good info on UNDERSTANDING jetting instead of the usual "what jet should I use?" type thing (you guys rock by the way, thanks again for your contributions). http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=26242
As for using the search engine, just saying "use the search function" isn't always the answer. Sometimes you get quick answers that way, sometimes you get a hundred threads with conflicting information and sometimes people just aren't sure what terminology to use in a search to get the best hits. Sometimes it's nice just to have a dialogue with people about a subject that you're trying to understand, even if it has been covered already. There's no substitution for interaction when you're trying to get your learn on. :beer
