I haven't done a Escort. But I have done a few different front wheel drive models ( Mercury Tracer, Ford Taurus, and a few GM vehicles ). I have found the easiest way for me ( to remove the tranny ) is to take the motor out first. Once the motor is out of the way the tranny can be removed with little or no difficulty. I'm not a expert, but I know what has worked for me.
Note: Front wheel drives can be a royal pain to work on. Howdy

LOL, what a coincidence!! We just started taking the engine out of a '95 1.9 Ford Escort today in my Automotive Tech class. The customer came in which a book full of things he wants fixed. Some of the motor items include: new head, valves and springs, head gaskets, waterpump, drive belt, timing belt, and a few other misc. things along with other work such as re-filling the A/C with free-on (don't know how to spell it), new brake lines, pads, rotors turned, change engine oil, and flush radiator. Woohoo!! All this work would technically total this little car!
Anyways, since there's so much motor work going to be done, we've decided to just pull the motor and work on it sitting on a stand rather than bust knuckels and get frustrated trying to cram tools into the little space Ford left under the hood for us here mechanics. We've already removed the alternator and power steering mounting bracket, along with the alt. and power steering pump and also disconnected a few hoses. Other than that, I can go through step by step how we get it out if you want me to.
