Which 'R' do you guys/gals prefer? The 86 version or the 85? And why.
Also every picture I look at of the two 'R's it seems to me that the 85 is more red and the 86 is more orange-red. Is this true?
What about Honda replacment fenders....if the colors are different does Honda still make both or do you have to mix and match body colors???
Thanks....(dying for an 'R' here...tired of the Tri z fuel pump and other issues)!

The waterpump R's are all the same plastic color. There are very small differences between the 85 and 86, nothing even worth mentioning. There basically the same trike. Now as for aftermarket plastic the only mfg is maier and it is decent stuff if you really need a new fender but the maier is a little flimsy and the plastic color is a little more burgendy or blood red versus the 250R OEM plastic is more of and orangisg red. You'll only notice it slightly if you get Maier shrouds and have a OEM tank.
I've heard in the past (as I'm sure others have) from a now permanently banned member whose name shall not be spoken here :p that there IS a color difference between the 85 & 86 250R stock plastic. The 86 is more orange.
Maybe someone out there with both can compare.

The 85's and 86's are the same color red. I've got and 85 and my brother has an 86. Now, the CR dirt bikes from the same era were definitley a different color red with an orange tint.

My personal favorite is the '86 R. The engine is silver versus the 85's black motor. For me...its the fact that it was the last year made, and I know there are no major styling differences, but I like the looks of the 86's better...

I prefer the looks of the 85', It has the thinner seat, in 86 they added more foam to give a softer ride, I personally thought the 85 seat was plenty of cushion, plus to me, it looks better.
the only plastic differences im aware of is the headlight shell, and maybe the decals on the plastic..

They're not that different, execpt the engine paint and other minor things, I would take an 86 over an 85.

There is something about the 85 that I like. I guess I remember when they first came out. I like the thinner look of the seat.

The major difference is that the 86 IS A SIX SPEED!!! More versitile gearing IMO. However only worth about a hundred more to me if you had the choice between the two. I have an 85 cause the price was right & it was CLEAN with mods I wanted anyway.

I like the 86 a little better but the differences are minor. I like the 1986 headlight a lot better. There's something different about the rear ends too (axle carrier I think). Not sure the details on that. The 1986 does have different decals (says 250R under the honda wing on the shrounds). The 86 comes with a flat slide carb too. Little snappier throttle response.
Both of them are awesome.

I prefere the 1986 for the stickers.
I would have to say that the biggest difference is the axle carrier is a different size, so is the swingarm where the carrier is. Probably the next biggest difference is the carb. :beer

wait a min... yes the plastic are different colors.. well at least from the production line.. along with some of the raised warnings on the plstic, the rear brake is a big difference in how it mounts to the swingarm, along w the engine colors, someone mentioned the frame was alittle different(i dont thk they are).. in the spring, ill pull out both and compare.. but they are tucked away for the winter already..

I like the 85 R better because it has a cleaner look to it and is thinner...

ACTUALLY there are a whole bunch of differences between them,,,, the motor is the same,, different color,,,, the frame is different they changed the fork angle only by 1 degree but it is different the tail light brackets are welded on a 85 not on the 86, the fork springs are different, the swingarnm and carrier are totally different ,,,brake mounts are different too,,,,, carb,,,headlight wattage differenttoo,,, if you really want to get technical the 86 IS,,
.4 inches longer
.4 inches wider
.2 inches lower
.8 inches higher seat height
.8 inches lower footpegs
.4 inches less ground clearance
2 lbs lighter

I like the looks of the thinner seat too but would love to have the functionality of the softer '86 seat. Maybe I just don't have enough "personal padding" but I think the '85 is hard as a rock!

Hey Red Rider, I hit your link and read about your Power Valve mod. Thats good stuff!
I always liked the decals and seat logo of the 86 better than the 85. But I like the look of the thinner seat of the 85. I like the gun metal grey engine color of the 86 better than the black motor on the 85. When it comes to headlight housing design, I don't know. I like all the venting around the 85 light. But the 86 has a more modern look to me. But the best in my opinion is the headlight/number plate combo on the 86/87 KXT. Honda should have done one like that. :beer

Nor sure what to tell ya...Is this the only watercooled R that you have ridden? If so see if you can borrow one. LOL You're one of the small % of R owners that can actually get into sixth gear (Dunes rider). Turns out, you might not even have it!!!!

Yeah, uh, better double count that to make sure :p Remember, one down five up!

The gear pattern should be printed on the case right by the shifter too. Unless that's another little '86 difference.

So AZ, you must have gotten one of the rare 5 speeds. Just think how it would run if they had put in that 6th cog. LOL. Just kidding, either you're counting wrong or your tranny has problems.

Here you go, six speed... http://www.allterraincycles.ca/85atc250rweb3.jpg ...... :Bounce
Were the CR250's of that era 5-Speed? Will certain years of CR transmission interchange with the 250R? Maybe someone swapped trannies?

There are some minor differences on the bottom end (not completely sure). I know the left hand case half is about $100+ more for the '85 than the '86. The '85 runs a smaller rear bearing carrier. The seat says "250R" on the '85 and "ATC" on the '86. The '85 forks runs two springs as opposed the '86's one spring.

Cases are the same from 85 to 89, only difference is the color. The differences in the motors from 85 to 89 were transmission gearing, porting, stroke and clutch assembly parts, they didn't change the cases.

Something's different, 85 case assemblies are 11002-HA2-000 for the left and 11001-HA2-000 for the right. While '86 runs a 11002-HA2-671 on the left and 11001-HA2-670 on the right. I rechecked the price difference and it was only like $50, but still I don't think going from black to grey would knock off that much!

It's not so much about paint as it is "original paint" on a machine that has been out of production for almost 20 years.
