( insert curse words here ) :p
Been working on the 250 SX's rear brakes and been having hard times.
The pads and cables with nuts and bolts were removed what appears to be a long time ago, i have used pads with a fair amount of lining left on them and they go on but can't get it right for some reason......
The adjuster needs to be threaded in all the way to get any friction and as soon as you use them any much at all they fade to nothing.
The drum seems to be in fair shape, a bit of a lip where the pads make contact but i'd say no more than 1/32 or so of an indent.
Can it be the cable ? you press down on the foot lever and it seems to pull the cable just fine????
I even tried coiling a guitar wire around the flat bar that spreads the pads with very little success.
ANYONE ????? :wondering

Well.
I just called my local Honda dealer to check on potential cost of a new drum and .. NLA ( no longer available ! )
So that's no longer an option.
what next ?

Have you tried moving the brake cam back a notch ?

You said there is a bit of a lip on the drum. It could be the drum is worn out even thought the lip looks to be small. Check the tolerance of the drum versus what's listed in the manual. Don't have a manual? Call your dealer and ask the service dept. for the measurement. And even though the cable looks and works fine, it could be stretched to the point that it no longer pulls as it should. Save the worn pads as spares and buy a new set of pads and install them since it's all apart anyway.
You'd be surprised how much the brakes can be affected by a worn drum, stretched cable and used pads when everything is added up.

yep. got the manual ( was reading it at work and forgot it there, and while at home last night did not have access to it ) tolerance says pads: 4mm new 2mm worn. drum: 1mm of wear = replace. !
1 mm.. come on......
so like sandman said. 1 mm here 1 mm there streched cable = no brakes.
I'm going to check with a brake shop and see if they can be turned and maybe lined somehow... pads i can get, but the drum will screw me i think.

Try ebay for the drum or you could possibly have the pads relined with oversized material. The main thing with the drum being worn out is your brakes will fade if it over heats.

woa.. just found this one and it does not look like what i have just removed...????
the one i took off had the 4 bolts, and 2 phillips screws that hold the drum to the outer housing. That don't make sense. would the same year same model trike have different brakes within one production year ?

Does not look like the correct drum to me. All my sxs have the screws to hold the drum.
