alright, after breaking my shifting foot on my snowmobile, i have no way to ride, i find this the oppurtune time to get some work in on my 1982 big red 200e. i want to put some new wooly booger tires, a cobra exhaust, rebuild the carb (not sure if its necessary), and i need some help. what can i get for my machine to improve its speed and acceleration, without causing the life of the machine to be shortened. right now i have an old crappy rusted exhaust with the silencer end broke off, and it is coupled to the header by some steel pipe sealed with quick-steel. the rear brake shoe is needing replacement, and the front brake 1 is going everything else is all original, very little rust a few cracks in the plastic, and a couple scratches and dents. so far this machine has treated me well for the 6 months ive owned it.
any ideas for upgrades are greatly appreciated,
John Tripp

I wouldn't go too extreme with the 200e. A new pipe and proper jetting will wake it up a bit. If you think you need more than that, look for a 200x or something. They can be found dirt cheap

You can also get a K&N air filter, keep in mind you will have to rejet with a pipe and filter.

I have to aggree with yater, lol. IMHO, dont spend too much on the 200e, get a sport model if you want something powerful.

I would stay away from the k&n air filters too. Do a search. Too much crap gets through those things

Dammit!

I couldn't disagree with that more. I've been using them since 1985 in all kinds of conditions (wet and muddy in Ohio to completely bone dry and dusty in AZ) and I have NEVER had anything at all get through these things. I was surprised to see this 15 year old K&N on my R hold up so well in all the dust out here. Running with no airbox lid in the most dusty place you can imagine, not a speck gets through it. Inside the boot is completely clean and I don't even run an outerwear sleeve on it. The key to a K&N is how you apply the spray on oil to make sure you get even coverage. If you oil them right, they work amazingly well. As a bonus, clean up and maintenance with a K&N is about as simple and easy as you can get. I'm running a Uni right now (as of just a few days ago for space reasons) and after oiling that thing only one time I already miss my K&N.

use a pre-filter, if you clean it properly it works fine, and you dont have to keep buying new UNI's all the time, but it depends on what conditions you ride on deciding on a filter ;)

alright i no where theres a 200m but its small, and the 200s is also smaller, being a tall kid, 195 lbs, i cant ride anything smaller than what i got. this machine is great the man that owned it before me was very old, and only used it for hunting season. nov 1-nov 30. other than that it was garaged for a long time, seat dry rotted so i reupholstered. and the kid that owned itr before my beat on it for a couple months.

Maybe check the compression and if too low a set of rings might be in order.

chain and sprokets in good shape ?

Welcome to the 82 big red pimping club! I'm already knee deep in throwing all my cash into mine! You can get high compression pistons, high flow filters, pipes, and other power adders for them. To be real about it though, I wouldn't really put alot of money into it, if I were you I'd look for a sport model, mines going to be pimped because I'm on the search for a super-unique machine as if having three wheels wasn't already somewhat unique. Good luck though!

John... They make a "shifter lever" that bolts to your shifter to allow you to shift with your hand... :D There's a mod so you can keep riding! :w00t:

Hehehe speaking of being able to ride while injured, I remember a few years ago when I broke my arm on my trx jumping I wanted to ride my 200X, and obviously it being clutch I couldn't work it with my left hand. So gues what? I took the front brakes off and put the clutch on the right side and rode/shifted with one arm! It was great fun putting around the yard but you dont do to much technical riding like that :p

John, a good place to look for local sales is Uncle Henrys Online www.unclehenrys.com. That is a good place to look for atc's if you're in Maine. But they go fast so you got to be quik.

ok ok ok here ya go a list of goodies:

wiseco piston kit 10.5:1 compression
web cam
pipe
re jet
k@n filter

that should get u started well enough for a good power range and a little more top end too..if u want more speed then u could get a bigger front sprocket or smaller back..if you want more torque u can get a smaller front or bigger back

I have a friend who blew his left hand off building a pipe bomb he also did the clutch thing on the right side with his brake, on his dirtbike, pretty uncomfortable for me to ride it.
