I have road a 500 since I was young. The same power that can get you into trouble can get you out of it. You can pull the front end in almost any gear at any speed. My bikes were geared about 75 or 80 MPH but you may go 100 set up right. Robbie Kenevile still jumps one. They are hard to start if you dont know the trick. If you can start one you can ride it .
there fun to ride, mind you boatloads of power, but useable power, you can putt around when you want, then just crank on it.

Don't kill yourself!!! Have fun!
Great bikes for trail riding up hear in the sand!! Our loose yellow sand robs tons of power from most bikes, but not these!! I have owned models 84, 86 and 2000. I have also ridden the 82-83 CR480's. Just watch the throttle hand, keep the brakes in working order, watch for broken bolts and brackets and dont take the thing out partying or let inexpierenced people near it!! I learned my lesson letting a "novice" take my 86 back 15 years ago, he looped it and broke is wrist bad and crashed my bike up.

3wheelrkid, everybody here is right about the 500. You will learn to RESPECT the throttle. When I first rode one (I had a 90 CR500R back in 93) I was scared to death, however I putted off real slow thinking I cant believe I am finnaly riding a 500. I took it around the 8 mile cross country loop getting a feel for it. I remember being impressed with how smooth the power was so much so that I was kind of disapointed. Well, after about 30 minutes I was in 4th gear all out on a straight and all of the sudden it stood up on me hard and very abruptly. I immediatly yanked the clutch and stomped on the rear brake pedal with the throttle still on . I barely saved it. I was very impressed. I learned RESPECT. The bike caught traction and used it. Here in Texas in July it is usually hot and dry. Hardpack and slippery. I was under trees, in the shade, and had found some arm yanking loam. That was an awesome bike and I wish I still had it. What year did you get?

I got an '85 CR500 and it ain't nothin but the truth!!! Take a dump before you mount up to ride it because it will scare the **** out of you the first time. My first couple of time's riding it weren't even really that fun because I had to concentrate on what I was doing so hard. My friend was riding my 400ex pegged out in 5th, I was just putting along beside him, I cranked down on the go-grip and she left the 400ex so far behind it wasn't even funny! I'll bet my '85 does every bit of 90+ M.P.H. Just be careful, right when you think you got it mastered is when it will show you who is the boss!

I rode a 92 wr500(basically a yz490 w/different ignition and few other things)and wow, that was fast. I'm told the kx500 is the fastest, cr500 is the smoothest and the wr is slow compared to both. the wr is prenty fast for me, I'd take a cr500 is the open fire roads, but in trails.

Aint that the truth. I have never ridden a 500 maxxed out, but it was hella scary just playin around with it. I did like how the powerband was smooth, but dont let that trick you, even though it was smooth, it still had power just about everywhere in the rpm range, they sound mean too, kinda like a two/four stroke hybrid I think it was an 89.

Yeah, CR500R's sound awesome! When it is just idleing it is nasty, it has a one note ping. Just ping ping ping ping. Not like a 250 ppppping pppping pping pppping. Full tilt and under a load in third, it has the most deep, throaty accelerating roar that puts modded 250's to shame. I love it.

Dirt wheel's did a test on a 1/4 mile and the CR500 beat the street bike.The mph was 103-106mph that is for a 1986 cr500 does the newer one's go faster?I have a 1990 cr250 I took to a 1/8mile and with knobby's (slow start)I went 76mph just clicking into 4th 1/8 throttle.It will probly do 90's in mph.
Sound like a sick ride. How would you compare it to a 1988 KDX 125?

Let's put it this way, times the 125 by 4, and you get 500, a 125 is to a 500, as a housecat is to a cheetah. (Who says gearheads dont know grammar)! :D

Ok, I have found a KX 500 close to me, and I am waiting on the guy to e-mail me back to try and work out a deal.I have heard different things about em, and to be honest, I am kinda intimadated by the thought of it. I am 15, and I am somewhat experianced. It is a 2001, and very nice. Would I be alright in first and second gear till I got the hang of it? I ride in a wide open field, so I shouldn't run into anything if I gave it too much gas. I guess if I can start it I should be ok. Any thoughts?

If you give a bike like that to much gas in first or second you'll be straight off the back! I'm not trying to scare you though. Just take your time I have 2 cr500's one in motorcross trim and the other is supermoto, once you get used to them you'll be glad you did.

Yeah, he's right. It's not the gears you have to worry about, it's your right hand. :D

Rasher, what year are your CR's? Do you have a Service Honda 500 by any chance? I am saving up for one as we speak, Especially since they are now making it with the generation 4 frame.

you have to be a lil scared/intimidated about anything with a motor tho, once you think youve got the hang of it,bout 10 minutes later, after you thought that, your screwed, and probly screwed with w/e your riding/drivin wrapped around somethin and bent in many different ways....

hey guys thanks for all the great feedback now im even more scared to take it for a ride!! no j/k. But anywayz i got it started today and I think there was a mouse nest in the cylinder cause there was cloth all over the spark plug and then when i got it to fire clothe peices came shooten out! it was pretty funny. But i actualy started it with the kickstart and not by poopin it so i think thats an accomplishment! and its only 40 degrees outside! By the way its an 85 all black ill post some pics today! it still needs some minor things like new throttle this one is kinda rigged dont want to take a chance ridin it with this one, new clutch handle, and left radiator right now it is just bypassed with a radiator hose from the other radiator to the cylinder. I dont know what kind of retard did that.

the supermoto is great on the open road but in town with it being geared up for speed its hard to stay at slow speed when in traffic and really hard to set off at the lights without lifting the front wheel, it took me a while to get the hang of it, dont think the local police like it though, I have a day time mot on it which means it doesn't have to have any lights other than the brake light so from the front it just looks like an off road bike that shouldn't be there.

i had a 92cr500 and it was worked talk about sheer power!!! i loved it. the power of a big ass street bike and the handeling of a cr250. just be careful i hurtmysefl alot fo my 500 until i missed so much work i said it wasnt worth it. and it was the best climber ive ever seen.http://goldwing.bikepics.net/honda-cr500-92-bikepics-212305.jpg here is a few pics for proof!

Just get your weight forward and nail it. You'll be spitting grass (or whatever) 15 feet in the air behind you. They're awesome. Just don't be a dink and have your weight back on the seat like you're riding a Big Red. Even half throttle will have you looking at the sky if you do that.

Dammit spoke it right. Get all your weight over the gas tank. I rode one once and I was sitting in the middle of the seat and I couldn't keep the front end down. Once I repositioned myself it was roosting like crazy. I just picked up a 92 CR 250 a couple of weeks ago - I'll post pics on here soon.

I have a cr500 im 6'2 250lbs and it still scares the piss outa me, remember it not how fast it go's, but how fast it gets there. not only can it do 100mph. but it gets there in about 1 block. so you get alot of arm pump just tring to hold on w/o the bike pulling itself from underneth you, HOLD ON ,first gear is almost worthless and the powerband is sick. mine is an 85 and very snappy, im told that they made the powerband more useful in the newer bikes but thats not the case w/mine good luck, be safe
You are very correct about your 85. I had an 84 and an 86 model and they both were pure wicked. They say that the 85 made more horsepower than any other model year built. I now have a 2000 model and it is nearly a dream. It starts way, way easier and does not really have any hit or sudden power surge. It just makes clean, controllable power all the way through the powerband. You can ride it like a trials bike if your want, 1st gear standing on the pegs plunking along, motocross style, jumping whoops etc. or plain trail riding. It hasnt fouled a plug or even seemed load up at all yet. It has a Procircuit pipe and Boysen reeds is all. On the CR500's, I believe that Honda changed the sprocket ratios a bit on the newer ones to smooth out the power. I am very happy with how it has performed so far this season. I owned this bike about 4 years ago and just got it back. Thanks.

:TrikesOwn be careful! they whelie effortlessly... It really is an overkill of power in my opinion. Unless you are in the sand its useless and a death trap! anything above a 250r is pointless.
P.S. If you are on tar or compact dirt you will whelie :Bounce

i can tell you from experience that a cr 500 is no joke. i had the pleasure of it being my first real dirtbike. boughtn it for a grand and put many a miles on it. it was a 95 cr 500. had it last summer and over the winter and ill tell you what i weighed 296 pounds and the ******* would come up in 5th on me. no bull.now im a measly 245. any speed any time even when i was just luggin round in 4th or 5th all i had to do was twist the throttle and wamm willie. i was clocked behind my friend at 87 mph before we ran out of road.but have fun and wear a brain bucket no sh*t. saved me more than once. cheers :beer :beer
