Honda called me today. my left side case gaskets are in and i can pick them up in the morning.

I'm opening her up to try and figure out why my gears are clacking when i shift. ( you can feel it on the shift lever .. and on occasion you hear it slip and the gears clack before they engage !! )

I'm also picking up Honda oil while i'm there ( yes i know it's more expensive. but i'm ruling things out to figure out the problem !! LOL )

The shift shaft is solid up and down, but when you push it in and out it has a bit of play.... can anyone confirm if this is normal or not ?

I posted a few Question on the .org site.. but man that place is slow. :o

Hmm?? Could be a disaster, could be just a missing E-clip somewhere?

Good luck!!

Oh.. and a detail i'd like to check.

( i just read thru the manual, but it does not mention this anywhere i looked )

After removing the left side starter cover and reduction gears... the larger cover, the shift plate etc...

Can i remove the shift shaft to inspect it without worrying about dropping a gear, and will it simply go back in from the left side without having to split the cases completely ? that part worries me a bit !

The shift shaft just goes through the cases but not through any gears so yes you can remove it without messing up the trans.
