I'm finally taking my '85 250R out to Glamis for Presidents Day weekend. I've never been to the dunes before, I'm really looking forward to it. Should I run an O-ring (or X-ring) chain in the sand? Seems like it would be a good idea. What do you guys do to set up your trikes for the dunes?
Thanks!

For a weekend of riding in the sand you don't need an O-ring chain, a regular chain will be fine, just keep it lubed and adjusted properly. However, no matter what kind of off road riding you do, an O ring chain will last longer when subjected to the grit of riding in the dirt/sand/mud, etc.
Make sure you have a whip flag though as it is illegal to ride in the dunes without one.

I ride sand all the time. If you need a new chain buy an oring chain. If you buy a normal chain all you will get done is tightening it all the time. A normal chain will only last 1 season.

Do as smokinwrench said, buy and oring chain. Anything less on a perfomace trike is a waste of money. If you don't mind tightning the chain on a regular basis or having to replace it once or twice a year than a non oring will do just fine.

Is an O-ring chain any harder on sprokets than a normal chain? More wear?

Ok, My turn. If your gonna replace the chain, please take the time to make sure you have great sprockets. If you dont, your just wasting your money either way on the chain IMO.

I'll B there, we'll have to hook up @ some point. Do ya know where youll camp? I don't yet but will post when I do...
I ran a crappy old chain for a season & it did strech way out. Have an Xring that I've been dune'n on for the past 2 seasons & only tightened it like once! A good set or two of goggles could help ya out ALOT (goggles probably wear out more than anything else in the dunes  ) . I usualy lead and use sunglasses cause I'm a wimp for the brightness. But if you follow anyone youll need them, clear ones for night for sure! :beer

Not sure where we're camping. Everyone else in my group is bringing their rock buggies, I'm leaving mine at home. I'm sure they'll all want to ride my 250R after they discover rockbuggies suck in the sand.... I'll post again when we iron out the details.
I may pick up an O-ring chain just for the hell of it. My sprockets are just about brand new anyway.
