Yeah, well today I broke the kick starter shaft clean off right at the side case. Engine has to come out, topend off, split the cases, take the transmission gears out to replace it. I'm tired of messing with the friggen thing, I've lost what little bit of paitence I had left with it. I dont know what to do with it...I just got my exhaust working 2 days ago, and I bought a headpipe from Jay to rob some pieces off of, and now this happens. Just gravy I tell ya...

sorry to hear that . PUt it up and get away from it for a couple weeks. When you have the desire you'll pick it up again.

If you bring it and the need parts to TF05 I will fix it for you at night during social time. I bet we can have it done in 2-3 hours. ;)
So put the rest together and bring it!!

Thanks for the offer Howdy, I'll think about it, I dont know. I really wanted to have it all done up and ready. Original plan was to pull the motor after I got it all tuned and setup good, get the frame and all the other stuff powdercoated...ect Maybe I can weld it, we'll see I guess.

Powdercoat everything you need and get it the way you want, then bring it to 'Fest and you and Howdy can have at it. Don't let the project die.

Nothing like pulling a motor apart at a gathering, brings a lot of onlookers.
My father races CB125 bikes (with XL185/XR200 motor in it) which are very similar motors to 200x as you all know. He was at a race meeting which was an enduro 1hr road race at Oran Park Raceway (the aussies will know the one). You had to have another rider so that you swapped at half way. Anyway, the other rider stuffed the gearbox during practice at about 10:30 in the morning but the race wasnt until 2pm. His options were to 1. live with the shitty shifting 2. Put in the spare motor (which is never competitive) or 3. disassemble both motors and swap gearboxes!
Needless to say option 3. was chosen. Boy oh boy does it draw a crowd when you have you whole race engine dissasembled and spread accross the pit bay. I think they ended up finishing 8th from a field of 25. Nobody else at the meeting would dare attempt a task like that prior to a big race but it was fun.

remember me telling you the same thing happened to my 79 XL500, after calling his mechanic and getting an estimate on repairs, the guy knock an extra 4 bills off the price of "the Nick"
it's an easy fix for someone who knows what they're doing...
and that ain't me..
my buddie is an expert in the xl/xr 500 motor and had it fixed in an hour and a half without splitting the case...
if you allow for removal and replacement of the engine, i have to say that howdy's estimate is right on the gnats arse..
i found my shaft was hollowed out to allow for lubrication making it somewhat of a weak link in the manufacturing of the otherwise dependable xr/xl motor
don't be discouraged... :beer

How can you do it without splitting the cases?!?! The snap ring that holds the tension spring on it is in the inner cases underneath the 2 back transmission shafts. Man if I can do it without splitting the cases I'd really like to know because that would save me alot of work.

i'm not joshing you around, the old owners mechanic said it was possible and my mechanic did it...
I'm certainly not an expert but its true, i'll get a hold of him this weekend and see if he can get me a play by play or tell me why my '79 can get it replaced without splitting and yours can't....
btw...whats the year of your XR?

Its such a conglomeration of parts. I think the bottom end is an 82. If we can find a way to change it without splitting the cases that would definetly be good news :)
