How come when I try to change my computer mouse it doesn't work?
I've tried simply changing it, changiing it with the machine off, changing it with the machine on, what am I missing?
Thanx muchly.

you may need to install drivers for it. did it come with a disk?

No disk.
I notice that when I try to install it, the computer says something about a "PS/2" mouse. The new mouse doesn't say anything about PS/2. Maybe there are different kinds of mice?

Dammit!

There's three. PS2, USB and the old serial type. Those aren't really types of mice, they're just types of connectors. Most new mice are USB (skinny, flat rectangular connector). PS2 is the next most common (round connector, looks like a S-video cable) and the serial mice have a big honking connector that looks a little like a monitor cable. You don't see those much anymore.

What type of connector does this new mouse have? What version of Windows are you running?

I'm, running Windows 98.
The new mouse has the same type of connector as the old one, the round connector.
Now I'm really mystified!
Any other tips?

I don't know. Is it one of those mice with like 5 buttons on it? You might need some drivers (can get them from whoever made the mouse' web site). It really should have at least some basic functionality even without them though. It does nothing?

You said it "says something" about a PS2 mouse so, what does it say exactly?

The proper way to change a PS2 mouse is while the machine is turned off by the way. Sounds like you already tried that but that is the correct way. You can swap USB mice while it's turn on though.

Yeah, it is a PS2. The computer tells me to turn it off to replace a PS2, butthe new mouse does NOTHING.
I think I'll try again and this time I'll unplug the machine. Other than that, I ain't got a clue.
Thanks very much for trying to help.

Unplugging it didn't help either.
That's it.
It's going back to Wally World.
Thanks again for trying, folks.
Cheers.

Once connected, if you pause for a minute the computer will say" new hardware detected". And then you should be prompted to proceed to install it. Good luck GREG

ps .if the puter doesnt detect it you will have to go to the manufacturers web site for the driver(s)

I cant remember if windows 98 had plug and play capabilities. Go to start, setting, control panel, add harware, and go through the steps to install your mouse. I believe that might be all your prob is.

Ok..

PS2 ( the round one with a bunch of pins looks lke s-video) :

Turn off the computer.. remove the old one, plug in the new one and restart. it should work as far as moving the cursor and what not.. if it has special extra buttons.. then you MIGHT need the " drivers " aka software to make the special functions work..

USB ( the flat, rectangle connector ) :

You can simply plug them in with the computer on and usually windows will pick it up and away you go. Same thing as before, without special software it should at least make the mouse cursor work and the left and right buttons work, but any extra 3/4/5th buttons will need extra software.
------
You may need to remove the old mouse driver before you install the new one :

Go to " Control Panel. " under " System " and click the " Device Manager " Tab at the top of the screen.

Go to the mouse option and delete any mouse that shows up.

Shut down /power off / plug in the new mouse. re-start and voila !
-----------

if that don't work :

------

Sometimes.. specially w98. you might need to boot in " Safe Mode " and remove the previous mouse driver before it will take the new one.

Steps:
-Power off
-Power on and keep hitting F8 a few times per second until a black screen comes up with an option for " Safe Mode " . arrow down to it and hit enter.

Go to the mouse option and delete any mouse that shows up.

Shut down /power off / plug in the new mouse. re-start and voila !

Buy a cat and let the mouse see it. It will work then.

O.K., no more dumb jokes.

The problem is that you have a mouse. Get a trackball and you will never have to worry about the edge of the table again. Optical is better.
