He was the greatest. None of the current late night hosts have the talent to come close to what Johnny was. Somewhere I have his final show that I taped off of the tube 12 years ago. Going to have to dig it up and review it.............
Godspeed, Johnny!

All the sex-oriented humor is hard to cope with; Johnny could be funny without taking our minds to the gutter. Yes, I know, I wasn't alive during his reign as cheif of late-night shows, but I've watched enough of him to realise that his humor came from something much more than the gutter - the heart. His show was something the whole family could watch together and laugh at. When I sit down and watch Leno, I sometimes want to puke; it's disgusting all the polution that is spewed out of their mouths that is supposed to be funny. A legend, Johnny was, it's too bad we don't have 6 more Johnny Carsons on late night TV. R.I.P. 1925-2005

I watched the tribute Tonight Show last night. I started watching Carson in the late 70's. I used to stay up late, and watch the monologue and then go to bed. Back then the show was 1 1/2 hours long. I had always hope he would come back and make a guest appearance with Leno.
Leno hit on something last night when he mentioned advice he was given by Johnny. Something to the effect of "Political humor works until you start to believe you are a political commentator." In all the years I watched Johnny, even with political jokes as his mainstay, I couldnt tell what his personal politics were in his work, something these "in your face" political activist wannabe comedians of today could learn from. Im sure Johnny was on the opposite side of the fence from me, but he had fun with both sides, and it was in humor, and not in just trying to be mean. While Jay is no Johnny, he is one of the very few who has actually taken that advice. I dont agree that Leno is cutter humor, but I do agree that I could have enjoyed another 30 years of Johnny, and it was his unscripted ad-lib moments that were his greatest.
