View Full Version : How should I break in my 200x?

I finally got all my parts to put my 200x motor back together, new piston, cylinder bored 1.00 over, and new cam chain tensioners. I'm gonna assemble it tonight or tomorrow. What's the best way to break it in? My mechanic said, just start it, run it for about 10 minutes or so, check it out durring this time for any leaks or anything, then shut it off and let it cool, after that just run it easy for a while. That sound right? Is there a better way?

... After that initial check, I wouldn't run it at more than 1/4 - 1/2 throttle for the first hour of the break in - and be sure to run it for at least 20 min. with out shutting it off in that first "Hour" of break in so everything can get seated, varying the speed and not keeping the throttle in the same position for very long. I wouldn't go past 3/4 and deffinately NEVER wide open untill you get at least 5 - 10 hrs on the motor after that, let it rip. This is what I've ever done to my rebuilds and have never had a grenade yet.

i never have that much patience. on my two strokes i do about 5 heat cycles over two days. i then do one or two rides around the block taking it easy. nest trip hold on tight

So, should I do the 10 minute thing before the "1st hour"?

You want to start it up to see if it leaks or does anything nasty - thats your "10" minutes - you don't have to be as rigid as I stated, just use it as a guidline - but whatever you do, don't run it wide open untill you get a few hours on the motor (5 -10)

About the only way your rebuild is going to grenade is if you didn't put it together right. Diffinently do the warm up leak check for awhile and listen to it to make sure its ok. I have rebuilt a couple hundred engines but only 2 bike engines. I've always done the initial check then road the hell out of it and have never had a problem.

Do I shut it off after the 10 minutes or keep going?

How long should I break it in before I run it wide open?

i am going by the seat of my pants on this one Jonathan.
all i can say is i am breaking in a 350x motor (top end redone) + i am just using common sense. i am at a stand still till i get my tank back this weekend, the plastic one i have is a p.o.s. i only have a half a hour on the motor now and plan on changing oil a 3 or 4 hours,,, oil is cheapest way of keeping the innards cleaned out in my opinion.
if seizes up (yikes!) i try and tell ya what i done wrong - lol

10 hours seems to b the consensus, both by most MFGR's and the posters in here. I would stick to 10 hours before WOT...................hell 10 hours of 1/2 throttle is a drop in the bucket compared to years of WOT...ehh?

Just 10 hours? My Clymer manual says something like 100 hours before WOT and then only short bursts of high speed until 150 hours. I though that was a little overkill.

Crank it up, let it warm up for a few minutes, check for leaks, and get on it and ride it like you stole it! J/K! Take it easy for a few days and you should be ok. If you installed a new cam, you might want to recheck the valve clearance after a couple hours. I would change the oil after about 2 or 3 hours. Like John was saying, the cleaner you keep it on the inside, the better off you'll be. Try to keep everything clean while it's on the workbench too.

Well youve got all kinds of opinions here, but I might as well throw in one more.
If youre just breaking in a top end (bore job and/or new rings) 30 minutes is sufficient. You will want to run it 5 or 10 minutes, let it cool a bit and retorque everything. Aside from that , about a half hour of leisurely trail riding, and you should be ready to roll.
This 10 hour break-in is if you are breaking in a new cam, or a crank. A lot of 2 stroke racers are replacing rings every 20 or 30 hours, and 4 stroke racers changing almost that often. Im getting 60 or 70 out of mine and I still couldnt imagine 10 hours of break in!
