All this talk of trike racin has inspired me to get off my dead a** and get this R race ready. I did a search on these bolts, but all I could find was how much of a pain in the ars they are. Somebody got some good (excelent) tips on how in the hell I'm supposed to get thing out?

How much patience you have? If none cut it. A little try heating it. Tho everything turns black. More, the start shootin some nice penetrate, give a few whacks with deadblow, every day 3 times if you can on both sides. In about a week it should give.....MAYBE.

Tip the bike on it's side and soak that bolt with some PB Blaster for a couple of days. Some heat might help too. Like the guy before said, big hammer and good punch. I have also had luck spinning the bolt with a 1/2" air impact and tapping the nut end with a hammer.

i used a 10 ton press to get mine out of my 200x. but a cheap way to do this is to make a press with a jack and like 2 trees and pinch the frame in between the 2 trees with the one side of the swingarm bolt elivated with a socket or sumthin so u dont push the bolt into the tree when u start to press it. or if u have a truck u could lay 2 cinder blocks down and then put the frame down on those and take a jack and pinch it between the frame of the truck and the cinder blocks. but it would be easier to pay your local dealer to have then press it out. as a last resort id try heating it up

If its anywhere close to being tweeked or bent, the only way is to cut it out. Take a small thin blade and cut it on each side of the swingarm. Knock those pieces out and then get a long punch or screw driver to get the rest of it out. They are a pain to get out esp if they are bent, so buy up a few for spares and cut that baby off.............peace

If its the 84 don't cut it. Next time I run into that problem I'm stripping as much as I can off the bike and sticking that puppy in a press. I cut my first one off after a week of fighting it. I hit it so hard I broke the frame on the rear brake lever side. then I could'nt find a swingarm bolt to replace it, John yanked his out of his bike and had one made on a lathe. I still owe him a few tanks of air for that.

It's an 86' John

I've got it to spin now. I was able to break it loose with an impact gun. I thought I could just kind of thread it out like 200x said, but no luck. It's sitting for the night now.

I think it is bent because when I spin it with the impact the swing arm moves up and down a little bit (1/4 to 3/8ths inch). Soo I guess I'm cutting it of?

Thanks for all the support guys and gal. If nothing else, it's nice to know people are pulling for me :) :)

It sounds like it's bent, I think a 400ex bolt works on the 85/86.

hot air, cool air, is how i got my 200x one out. heat it up then put a cold rag on it. i heated it with a torch. then colled it off then it finally broke(this was after i cut the frame so i could get the swinger out (had another frame))

This is one of the easiest things you can do if you have the right tool. An air chisel with a cut/flat end will nock em out everytime. I used to use PB and sledhammers and all the other home tricks until one day a friend let me borrow his air chisel. It's amazing how a $20 tool can change your life. Another great thing is when you get it out you can use it again.

So I thought I was the only one who had this problem! First I tried to soak it for about 2 days. 1st I tried a small hammer but tono avail. So I stepped it up a notch to the 5lb hammer-allthat did was mushroom the tip of the bolt! So, completely aggrivated I pulled out the heavy artillary the ole recipricating saw. 1..2..3..off came the swinger. Then the only problem was finding a new swinger bolt-took a couple of weeks but got one from dads on egay for $10. now its all brand new back there Only took about half a day.

You guys are not the only ones feeling the pain of a siezed 85/86 R swingarm bolt, I finally got around to wanting to strip the rest of the frame, and that thing is LOCKED in there, I really dont give two craps about the bolt, So I beat the living hell out of it with direct hits with a sledge for liek 10 minutes straight, didnt even budge it, I had to do the jack trick on my old 84R, I'm gonna try that on this tomorrow, if that doesnt work, im just going to cut the dumb thing.. I also heated the bolt till it was smoking red hot and all that did was burn the hell out of myself, LOL.

you guys! the best way to get a rusted/seized bolt or nut off is simple....all you have to do is heat up the bolt up with a torch...try to focus the heat on the bolt itself and less on the nut...get a parraffin wax candle, basically a regular candle.....heat until red hot, and ram the candle on the nut and bolt getting as much wax to penetrate the threads as possible COVER IT IN WAX, keep doing this until it wont melt anymore...grab onto the nut with a 1/2" drive rachet and i almost gaurantee it will come off, and come off easy.....not 100% effective, but 99.9% and it has always worked for me....you can also use this on engine block threaded plugs and broken-off bolts, etc....

Now that you have it completely apart. Grease the crap out of it. And it might not be a bad idea to pull it every year or so and grease again. This was a suggestion to me from Dads.

what the heck does the wax do?

Turns to liquid with the heat and gets sucked into the parts and acts like lube.

Wow, I have had the new swingarm bolt, Pivot Works kits for the linkage and swing arm, etc for two months. I was waiting to do this deed because I was terrified of siezed bolts. I am going to plunge into this project soon, but I have one question. Will the 86 TRX250R Pivot Works kit work for an 86 ATC250R?

Victory is mine!! Nothing effin worked, I tried it all. I beat on it so hard and missed I dented the frame :(

I saw that when I hit the bolt it was pushing the frame apart! So I figured out the right hand side bearing was stuck to the bolt not allowing it to come out. I ended up cutting off about 1/4 in at a time inbetween the frame and the dust cover. After 3 times it was enough room to get the bolt past the frame on the other side and the swingarm came right off. Once the swingarm was off, I was able to pull the rest of the bolt out. The bearings were just powder and a few parts left of the needles.

Needless to say, I'm glad as heck it's out, kinda bummed about denting the frame (it was the only unmolsted part on the bike).

Thanks for all the advice :)
