Justifying spending money on a 200s chain covers

I took out the rear axle in my 85 200 s last night, with the intentions of replacing the bent one with a straight, used one i bought off of ebay.

When i finally got everything out, i noticed that the chain tensioner was missing 2 nuts and a washer. It must have been like that for a long time, and the chain wore a hole through parts of the inner and outer chain guard/cover. I got the part numbers from the dealer, and they are discontinued. I took the numbers and put it on servicehonda.com, and i got these for prices

is $223 + shipping worth spending on this 20 year old bike? I have already spent that much on it, and it was on all little things that needed to be fixed. I PM'd howdy asking if he had any, and he hasnt replied yet. I am lookign on ebay for them, but havent had much luck, just one inner cover which a seller who i dont like is selling.

I also need a skid plate for the bike too.

Any ideas where I could find one set for at least half the price of this one? DO you think i should just spend the money and fix it good the first time with new parts?

Hey, i have a 185s out in my shed out at my farm with a skid plate on it, im pretty sure it'd fit. Do you mean you want the chain guards? I have some off of that 185 but i doubt they'd fit. Unless your chain guards are sealed like brand new they are really useless. If you want the skidplate pm me. I could check about the chain guard off of the 185 and see if they'd fit my 200s. If id sell bolth cheap.

The chain guard/shield/cover...whatever, on my 200M was placed in the round file not long ago. I got tired of listening to the chain rubbing against it each time it took a hit from some rock/branch or trail obstacle. I figured that if the sport trikes can run with out them why not the 200M? The only thing that I do now is make sure that it's cleaned and oiled more often

I took mine off a long time ago. I think they actually hold more junk in then keep junk out. No problems what so ever by leaving it off.

As long as you have the front sprocket cover I wouldnt worry about the chain case. Just be sure to keep the chain oiled.

now i have mixed ideas on what to do lol...

say if youre ridin in the woods, and some brush would get all caught up in the chain and the exposed rear sprocket...couldnt that do some damage to something?

Another note, my front sprocket seems loose on the shaft that it sits on. The nuts are tight but its still loose. Is it time for a new front sprocket? I know the shaft isnt loose in the engine or anything, just the sprocket on the shaft.

Any poor branch/twig/brush will become immediately turned into fine mulch, at no expense of the chain or sprocket. After all vegetation is nothing compared to steel!


Another note, my front sprocket seems loose on the shaft that it sits on. The nuts are tight but its still loose. Is it time for a new front sprocket? I know the shaft isnt loose in the engine or anything, just the sprocket on the shaft.

The front sprocket has built in clearances to allow for engine to rear sprocket offset. Nothing to worry about, unless the shaft becomes grooved or the sprocket begins to flare out at the splines.

If your local honda dealer looked them up and said they were discontinued, they will be discontinued when service honda tries to order them too. They may show as available on service hondas price checker, but when they try to order them, you will get an email from then saying they are not available.

My 185 doesn't have one. I'm not to worried about it. I wouldn't pay 200+ dolla unless the trike was absolutely mint.

Think about it this way. Mostly any 3 wheeler with suspension, quad, dirt bike etc. doesn't even come from the factory with covers. Like I said a few posts back. I have had NO PROBLEMS what so ever by leaving it off. I drive through all kinds of junk too.

Also, the front sprocket is supposed to wiggle like that. It's not actually bolted to the shaft directly. It just kinda 'floats' on there and is only held on by the retainer which is bolted to the gear.
