Ok.. ( i'm sure my manual covers this, but i'm at work, and kinda bored, plus i need info on a specific detail and opinion that the manual won't cover )

On my SX. when you remove the cover for the clutch adjustment...

There are markings on the case cover " <--- more . Less ---> " ( i might have the more and less directions wrong.. but this is just an example )..

Manual says to loosen up the lock nut, turn the screw out fully, then in 1/4 turn and snug the lock nut. but What effect does a bit more or a bit less give ?

more grab? or more slip ?

Less grab? opr Less slip ?

What effect would you get if the clutch was not releasing fully when you shifted ? even at lower RPM's.

Please.... with beer on top !! :beer

I believe more or less grab. The adjuster puts pressure on the spring plate which, activates the clutch. By not releasing fully, do you mean it grinds a little into gear? I would say by this, you have it adjusted too tight. If it is slipping, the clutch is too loose. I would just say regardless, adjust how the book says and if this still aren't right, maybe the clutch is too worn.

Too much tightening cant shift, every thing is too tight to disengage. too little, and its like not pulling on clutch lever too disengage and clutch won't.. It just grinds when trying to shift. won't disengage. Its a setting for clutch disengagement, not actual clutch plate pressure. So no setting of clutch plates just the right setting for perfect clutch engagement and disengagement. Hope that helps. I know how to do it just hard too describe. lol. I thought I take a stab at it anyways.

You guys are on the right track.. i'm having slight grinding when i shift, so i should go clockwise a bit more than 1/4 turn ???? ( i have it adjusted by the book right now )

When you back the screw ( counter clockwise ) you are removing all play ? right ?

then you go clockwise ( in ) a 1/4 turn to adjust how the amount of play when it dis-engages ?... and if it's not dis-engaging. ie: grinding a bit when i shift ... i should go a bit more than 1/4..

that make any sense ?

Oh.. and if that does nothing... i'd have to assume my clutch is worn .. huh.

Boy this would be easier if I had a clutch in front of me to look at. I think you are correct. Backing the screw out allows the clutch to come to neutral position before adjusting. Going in a little more than 1/4 will put more pressure on the plate which may help in disengaging the clutch, but it may also be like you are always riding the clutch and make it wear a little quicker. You could have either worn plates or the springs may need to be replaced. I almost would want to lean toward the springs as being the problem, since they are the heart of the whole mechanism. Anyone out there agree or am I off base on this one?

You could try fine tuning more than 1/4 of a turn clockwise or less to see if this helps. Good luck, let us know how you make out. Got to love this trouble shooting. Its a pain in the *** but rewarding when you finally conquer it.
