Damit.. ( not the username.. but the curse !!)
I think i got screwed on my rear brakes....
I bought a rear brake drum for my 85 SX from e-bay. listing said it was an 85 model..
I'm reading my clymer manual, and i hope it's wrong, cuz it says that only the 86 model year had a double bearing in the brake drum/hub !!.. the one i got does.. and my SX is an 85.
Can anyone confirm this for sure. 100 %.. PLEASE..
and if so.. anyone for one for trade ?!!
ps: Any chance the hubs interchange and the drums be the same ?

I know my old 250sx had 2 wheel bearings on each side. I know cause I had to replace them and I thought wtf? I remember cause it cost me like $120.

Clymer Quote Page 436:
Rear Axle/ Brake Panel Bearings
(Fourtrax 250, 1986 ATC 250SX Models )
These are the only 250 cc models that are equipped with bearings in the brake panel. All other 250cc models have the bearings located in the right-hand axle bearing housing. wich is covered in chapter eleven.
....
So, does this mean that the 86 have the bearings directly in the brake hub ? after reading this a few more times.. i think this is the case.. so i'm ok in that case, because mine are in the splined hub and the brake drum is mounted to this......
make sense? :D

Can't you just take the old one off and see if they match up? I have an 85 and 86 sx, but I can't remember

The 86 is different. The drum itself looks different. and on the back side it looks a bit different. They made this change to keep water out of the brake drum. Go to bike bandit and look at the schematic on the 85 and 86 you will see the difference immediately. The 86's swing arm assembly is completely different also. The 85 does have bearings on the inside and out. Hope this helps. :beer Oh yeah, the BigRed is the same way.

The 85 has 2 bearings back to back in a removable hub that bolts to the brake backing plate. As mentioned above, the 86/87 is entirely different and the outer visible cover ITSELF does not rotate but the 85 drum does rotate visibly.
Both years have bearings in the backing plate area, not in the drum itself.
There are like 7 different Big red, 250SX, 250ES style rear ends. Lots of differences but the swingarm itself gives it away.
Can you see your drum turning? 85
Is it enclosed? 86/87 and the swingarm doesn't look so heavy and bulky as the 85.
