Just wondering if anyone has any idea why my 3 wheeler just locked up while riding? Does anyone know of any commonly know problems with an 83 honda that may have caused this? This is my first 3 wheeler and this was the first time riding - I believe it was sitting around for some time. The engine was still running when it locked up. The kick starter also now seems to be jammed.
Thanks
James. :wondering

I can;t say without looking at and I wont see itm until the weekend - don;t keep it at home.
All I can say off the top of my head is that it has a white tank, red seat, it's a 250 and compliance date was 6/83. Thats all I can remember.
thanks......

If this is a 250R I probably have some bad news, your going need to replace the bottom end. I could very well be wrong, but this is what it sounds like too me as of this moment.

Did it have any oil in it :wondering ? Some has to ask the obvious. ;)
well, did you run mixed oil in the gas for starters....if it is actually a '83 R its odd that it has a white tank...what did it sound like when it locked up? did it just die? or slowly loose power?? any clunk noises when it died? how hard where you riding it when it died? ...after these questions are answerd we can better tell you what the heck happend too it..

i know what this is. it happened to me!
your engine is trying to say to you its not getting enough oil. either in the bottom case or through the gas.
your trike will be fine and go along then suddelly the back wheels jam. the trike blubs out and the kick start is jammed for a while. then you notice the engine is past boiling point by 1000 degrees and when it cools down it will start. untill it happens again!
This happened to me. and i had to have my topend rebuilt as i wrecked my cylinder wall!
could be a similiar problem to yours.. but mine done that and i had to re do my top end. see what others reccomend

Sounds like the piston seized in the cylinder more then likely from excessive heat and/or lack of oil.
But as My trike Sucks said, we need to know the answers to his questions and how long were you riding it before the lockup?

He said it was still running when it locked up so that rules out a piston seizure. Unless its something simple like a wedged chain that jumped a tooth and is stuck between the motor or swingarm, something in the transmission broke or became dislodged.

Again, I am amazed at the lack of thoughtless info some people spew out some times. DID ANYONE ACTUALLY REALLY READ HIS POST?. He clearly stated the engine still ran. God forbid he actually listened to you guys and ordered a couple of hundred dollars worth of parts he dosent need. Anyway -You need to tear that thing apart and take a look ... the answer will soon show itself.
