What is the best way to start off a drag?

with my SX I nomally wait till one of us says go then I hit the gas and nomally can win. One time I tried dumping it in 2nd gear and landed on my back. So how do you drag racers do it?

First, you want to start in as a high a gear as you can without it bogging on the start. Its takes some trial and error. Also, on an autoclutch, you need to learn how to manually dump the clutch. For example, if you are starting in 2nd gear, you would click it into first, and then lift the shifter up to where it clicks into second, but hold it up. When the shifter is held up, it is in 2nd, but the clutch is disengaged. Then you rev it up, and the ease shifter with you foot, slipping the clutch for a good high rev takeoff. It takes practice. Its a lot harder to learn to slip the clutch with the shifter than it is with a hand clutch.

thats what i did originally, I picked it up in 1st and dumped it into 2nd. that set me on my back at 1/4 throttle so third should be good to start in.

well the reason you ended up on your butt,, is because you don't have enough power to spin the tires in second,,,, so third would just smoke the clutch,,,,

I do second gear starts (ocasionaly 3rd) sit basicaly on the tank. Dump the clutch once ive gone about 3 feet on on the back of the seat for the traction.

i cant even dump the clutch in 2nd on my 82 200...just bogs out :\

How hard is that on the SX'x clutch??? I would hate to screw up my dads bike.

you would try to drag race somthing thats not yours? and by the way you said it, your father wouldnt really appricate that.. so i would have to suggest wait till you get your OWN bike to start doing that..

wheelie pop... go out in the woods someplace, and practice holeshots.. drag racing is won on the line, not at the end.. if you can hook up and go, you can beat bikes that are a ton more powerful.. the only way your going to get it is practice.. keep doing it over and over and over and over again, when you burn your clutch up and replace it.. repeat process.. and then you will have gotten it :Bounce

I wasnt looking to really drag race it, but more of do wheelies better from a start, as it is right now the bike is actually half mine half my dads. The reason why im not intrested in drag-racing it is
1.) Its slow
2.) My Tecate pretty much wins agianst most stuff I race.

ok I tried out starting in second and third and third works best. Doesnt bog down much. Thanks for the help.

I have always started in first gear with good success. But then again, my bike is geared kind of high.
