New piston, valve job. Pipe, is stock, Uni filter, carb has stock jets. I will run with the choke in the middle position. I have oil to the head, so I'm thinking it is something in the carb. Set the carb per the clymers guide. With a Uni filter could the valve job be enough to need to jet up? I have the needle on the next to richest groove. It runs great for about 10 minutes then starts to ping really bad. The head was bugered up from this when I got it, hence the valve job and new piston. Any thoughts? I cleaned the carb once already, and have new o-rings on the intake. Help if I can get it running good I can sell it to someone without guilt.

If its pinging then its caused by ignition timing that is too far advanced or low octane fuel. Line the top CDI pickup with the rotor and make sure that the "F" mark on the flywheel is visible in the hole in the engine side cover. Make adjustments as necessary.

Thanks, I'll try that and see what happens.

Could be running to lean, if it run's better with the choke on, and it's set according to the manual, it probably could stand to be jetted richer. Better richer than leaner.

Would a basically stock bike need to be richer? Does the Uni filter make enough difference to require a jetting change?

jsut a filter shouldnt make to much difference to need to be jetted

A free flowing air filter will make a significant change to jetting. Is it in the airbox or on the carb? Try a few jet sizes up..oh and check the ignition timing. What compression are you running?

people throwing all this out and no one has yet said CHECK THE PLUG

pull the plug and look at it..

then go here

jet accordingly.. the uni filter is causing it to run hot.. its too lean... heres the difference.. in laymens terms.. try to breath through a balled up shirt.. now try to breath through a peice of screen.. the screen is easier.. same situation with a air filter.. the stock filter is like the shirt, while the aftermarket is like the screen..

check the plug and your questions will be answered
